WESTWELL, George Edward
Born September 10th, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, USA to William and Doris Westwell (née Leigh). Died February 15, 2022 at his home in Tweed peacefully with his children by his side. He dearly missed his wife Jean (née Chapman) since her death in 2008 and it is comforting to think of them together holding hands again. They were a model couple for their generation. Dad served in the U.S Army in World War II as a jeep driver in the mountains of Italy and was a skilled driver- if a little fast for those in the passenger seat. After the war he apprenticed as an autobody repairman and when they could afford it, he married his sweetheart- the girl next door. He opened his own garage and dealership in Bells Corners and built his own house in Britannia Heights- both on the west side of Ottawa. A few years later the government appropriated the land in Bells Corners and dad accepted a job teaching autobody at the Ontario School for the Deaf. This made it necessary for dad to get his grade thirteen and then other courses both in the summers and night school. He spent thirteen years teaching then thirteen more years as the director of all the technical courses taught at OSD.
His retirement began with a bang, he had gall stone surgery and mom had a stroke that made dad her primary caregiver which was not easy for a man of his generation with clearly defined husband and wife roles. With world travel out, they spent their winters in the warmth of Florida and summers at their cottage near Killaloe. After mom’s death of a second massive stroke in 2008 dad spent increasingly more time in his adopted home of Tweed. He will be remembered by many who made his trips to town to the Gateway Health Center, grocery store and the library a social occasion. He really enjoyed his time at the library playing bridge and a thank you to all who helped make his waning years pleasant.
He has been the patriarch of our family for a long time and there will be an empty space in the lives of son Leigh, daughter Jan, their partners and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by younger siblings Len, Denis and Barb. Arrangements: McConnell Funeral Home, Tweed. Cremation has taken place and interment of his and mom’s cremated remains in Ottawa will be on a nice day in the spring.
