Dr. J. Alyre’s Obituary
Alyre Comeau, Yarmouth, passed away February 12, 2022, surrounded by his children. Born in Comeauville (la butte des Johns) on February 23, 1925 to Ulysse and Évangeline (LeBlanc) Comeau, his early education took place at Collège Ste. Anne. He went to Dalhousie University for one year then on to Université de Montréal for four years from where he graduated with a Doctor in Dental Surgery Degree. Alyre set up his first dentistry practice in Comeauville across from the high school. From there he travelled to Caledonia staying in a hotel for approximately six months with his practice there. In 1952, he moved to Yarmouth where he practiced for more than 40 years. Outside of his office, Alyre had many interests and many of these were centered around music. Besides playing the trumpet, organ and piano, he had been gifted with a strong tenor voice and a talent for directing choral music. Through the 60’s and 70’s he could be found in the summertime at Harris’ Seafood Restaurant, playing the organ for the patrons on weekend evenings. He played trumpet in the Yarmouth Citizens Band for many years and directed the Nova Chords, a women’s choral group of about 30 voices. He sang in many choirs including Chorale de la Baie Sainte-Marie, Chorale Acadienne du Sud-Ouest, and Yarmouth Community Chorale. He played the trumpet in La Fanfare Régionale de Clare and directed a choir for the 100th anniversary of Église Sainte Marie, Pointe-de-l’Église, where his father was the organist when the church originally opened. He was the director of the St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral choir for more than 60 years retiring from this role at the age of 90. Until just a few weeks ago, he could be found after lunch playing the piano for the residents in Yarmouth Heights where he was living. He was a man of music! Besides his parents, he was predeceased by Cora Hardy, his siblings: Sister Aimée Comeau, Gerald (and Florence) Comeau, Jeannette (and Normand) Pothier, Antoinette (and Gerald) Belliveau, granddaughter, Lianne Comeau in infancy. Alyre is survived by his four children: Michel (Trudy), Paul (Pat), Lise (Jim) Mood, Suzanne (Elroy) d’Entremont; step son, Robert Hardy; grandchildren: Jeannette Comeau (Patrick Fok), Gilles (Kate) Comeau, Dominique Comeau (Will Vogel), Ian Comeau, Shawn (Darcy) Comeau, Sarah (Shawn) Boudreau, Andrew (Courtney) Mood, Allister Mood (Candice Porter), Colin Mood, Phillip (Kaitlynn) d’Entremont and Alix d’Entremont (Trevor Saulnier); great-grandchildren: Kiley and Jessa Comeau, Cole and Claire Boudreau, Luke d’Entremont and many nieces and nephews. Alyre will be remembered for the gift of music that he gave to so many and passed to his children and grandchildren. Described by one grandchild as being fun, he will be remembered as a man who loved being with people and they loved being with him – his family, his friends and his patients. His patients were quite proud to say “he was my dentist”. He thoroughly enjoyed his trips to Kedji whether out back camping with sons and grandsons or with family in Jeremy’s Bay. He enjoyed nature and loved to go hunting and fishing as well as a good Mariners hockey game. He was always up for a golf game, and at 96 he was quite adamant that he could still play! At 85 he tried to get up on the water skis one last time. There will be many stories told of laugher and times spent at his cherished camp in Maxwellton with his dogs by his side which usually included steak suppers and a cold Schooner. Pap, Grand-père, or Old-père (as his great-grandchildren named him) will be missed and long remembered. A visitation will take place from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 22 at Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, with prayers at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1:00 pm Wednesday, February 23 from St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral, Yarmouth, Father Henry Smolenaars officiating (live stream available via St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral Parish website). Due to Covid-19 restrictions, seating may be limited at both the visitation and the funeral Mass and social distancing guidelines must be followed. Proof of vaccination is required. It has been requested that there be family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Tri-County site of the VON or the Nova Scotia Nature Trust or a charity of choice. We want to thank the staff of the Yarmouth Heights for the care and friendship provided to dad over the past three years, also, special thanks to Dr. Roland Muise and staff on 4 North and 4 East, Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
