SIMONS: Elly
Elly Simons, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Huronview Home for the Aged, Clinton on Thursday, February 3, 2022.
Elly was the baby of twelve children and was born in Helvoirt, Nederlands on September 8, 1932 to her beloved mother, Maria Timmermans-Backx and beloved father, Andreas Timmermans. With an adventurous spirit, she immigrated with her husband, John Simons in 1955 and settled in Southwestern Ontario. Elly was dedicated to family and extended her reach to those in need both here and in developing countries, in keeping with the family values honoured by siblings devoted to missionary work, local families and charities.
Elly is remembered as an incredible homemaker. She was able to sew clothes for children or dolls on a dime, canned and harvested a massive garden and trees. As a homemaker, she was constantly working to fulfill the needs of the household. Elly discovered yoga and massage. She took courses in pottery. After the children left, she became more actively involved in charity work at a local level.
In her spirit of independence, she bought her own house in her 60s, creating several gardens that gave endless hours of enjoyment for her and the community. When she turned 72, she learned how to weave mats using recycled materials for homeless people. Numerous quilts and afghans were created for community and families.
She is survived by her siblings, Jeff Timmermans (Canada), Joke Timmermans (Nederlands) and Cory van Gompel (Nederlands). She is predeceased by Tiny (Jan Reijs), Martin, Doortje (Harry Uitdehaag), Riet, Harry, Theo (Diny), Nell, Trees, and brother-in-law Paul van Gompel (Corrie).
She is survived by eight sons and daughters. Joe (Karen), Mary (Pete Wise), Andy (Amy), Tony (Caroline), Ann (Edwin Alphonse), Theresa (Jamie Lafond), Erin (Gregory Gaboo), Cathy (Al Wolosinovsky). Her grandchildren, Chris (Megan), Jennifer (Seamus O’Neill), Grace, Matthew (Katie), Thomas, Kristina, Natasha (Julian), Dylan, Zachary, Fraser, Kyle (Vivi), Petra, Dorian, Isadore and great-grandchildren Alexandra, Elizabeth, Fiona, Quinn, Lachlan, Luke, Will (angel), Nicholas, Owen, Annalise, Kiera, Cadence.
A private family funeral service will be held for Elly at Falconer Funeral Homes – Bluewater Chapel in Goderich on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Although the service is private, the family invite you to view the service via livestream and the link will remain available on the funeral home website at www.falconerfuneralhomes.com for 90 days.
