Obituary
Anton Vrsic passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the age of 85. Anton is survived by his son, Michael, his daughter, Tania, his daughter-in-law, Roula, and his grandchildren, Maria, Samuel, Maximilian, and Michaela.
Also known as Tony or Tunč, he was born in Slovenia in the town of Pristava to Berta and Janez, Anton immigrated to Canada in the 1960s. It is here that he met the love of his life, Maria Musar at a Slovenian youth dance at a Slovenian church on Manning Avenue in Toronto, and their grand love story that transcended decades began. Together, with only a suitcase of clothes each to their names, they built a life and welcomed their two children into the world, Tania and Michael.
Anton attended trade school in Slovenia for four years where he trained as a painter and when he came to Canada, he ventured into starting his own businesses. Through his unbridled entrepreneurship, passion, and perseverance, he built multiple thriving businesses including AC Standard, Grid Industrial, AC Summit, AC Newmarket, ASGLOB Imports, and Trans-Tourist Travel. Throughout the decades, he employed hundreds of people before he retired, always leading with compassion, authenticity, and grit.
His leadership didn’t stop there. Anton proudly supported his Slovenian heritage. He was a Slovenian community leader and played a role in keeping his culture alive in the Greater Toronto Area. He helped found Kanadska Slovenska Skupina, the Canadian-Slovenian Sports Club Toronto, and organized hockey, soccer, and volleyball tournaments in Slovenia for Canadian-Slovenians young and old to keep them connected with their roots. He also served as a key fundraiser to obtain the first MRI machine for the Slovenia Hospital in Ljubljana.
Anyone who knew Anton knew that he had an enormous heart and a personality that was larger than life. He lived life to the fullest and was generous in spirit and many unspoken acts of charity and good deeds to his community, family and friends. Anton had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way, and in his company, he made everyone feel welcomed and gave them a safe place to belong. Whilst he had two children of his own, he was a parent and mentor to many throughout his 85 years.
When he loved, he loved with his entire being and the impact of his great nature is evidenced in the friendships and familyhood he has built in every community that has been fortunate to have had him in it. Anton spent his summers fishing at Obonga Lake in Northwestern Ontario, his autumns harvesting grapes at his own vineyard as well as those of friends and family in Slovenia in the company of his beloved nephews, nieces, and sisters, his winters enjoying the warmth of the sun in Palm Springs, and the rest of the year in Mississauga where he lived with his son’s family after his beautiful Maria passed away. No matter where he hung his hat, he was known for his signature trademark of enjoying a glass of wine and a cigar, and opening his home to anyone and everyone.
Anton believed in living life to the fullest and appreciating every day as a blessing. His positivity, whistling, storytelling, laughter, and finest example of being a good human and great man were contagious and inspired those around him to be better people. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, acquaintances, and all who had the honour of knowing him.
Anton’s wishes were to have his remains taken back to his place of birth where a traditional Slovenian funeral service will take place and he will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Maria, and his parents in his familial plot. In lieu of flowers, It was Anton’s wish that in lieu of flowers, any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church.
