Obituary
It is with heartfelt sadness we, the family of Doug Hallam, must announce his passing at age 86 on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at the Meadows, Swift Current, SK.
Douglas Rolland Hallam was born March 21,1935 in Limerick, SK to Thomas & Elsie Hallam — the youngest of eight children. Doug grew up on the family farm in Limerick and eventually decided to try his hand at construction work nearby. His interest in moving buildings was peaked after helping build a foundation and watching a building being relocated onto it. In 1963, he moved to Moose Jaw, SK to start working with Ray Butz, where his passion and love of the building moving industry took hold. Doug continued working and learning with him until 1969, when he was provided the opportunity to purchase Ed Barabe’s building moving business in Swift Current.
On April 4, 1970 Doug married Diane Beilhartz in Gravelbourg, SK and together, they raised their three children in Swift Current while building Doug’s Hallam Building Movers Business over the next 51 years together, servicing Southwest Saskatchewan.
Doug loved and lived for moving buildings. It became the family joke when, three years after he semi-retired leaving his son, Lloyd, to oversee the crew more often, that halfway through 2020 he announced to Lloyd that he felt, at age 85, he was finally “maybe old enough to fully retire.” In 2021, Lloyd bought Doug out to continue the legacy he had spent 52 years of his life creating. Although Doug did remain actively involved with suggestions and advice right up until the day before his passing.
The Family would also like to Thank Dr. Lee, the nurses at the Swift Current Hospital, and especially the nurses and staff at the Meadows – House 10 for the care and compassion they provided to Doug over the past year and a half following his surgery. No words can express our appreciation of all of you enough.
Doug was predeceased by his daughter, Pricilla; his parents, Thomas & Elsie Hallam; and by all seven of his siblings.
Doug is survived by his wife of 51 years, Diane; his children and their families, his daughter, Wendy (Robert) Fersch and their children, Doug’s grandchildren, Matthew, Lane, and Shaina (Kortlan), their children, Doug’s great-grandchildren, Nohlan, Emmet, and Kendrik; his son, Lloyd (Trish) and their children, Doug’s grandchildren, Tori and Austin; his son, Thomas; his sisters-in-law, Brenda (Glenn) and Beatrice; his brothers-in-law, Elroy (Sandy) and Gordon; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family celebration of Doug’s life will be held at a later date.
