At age 85,
Richard Fleming
of Kildare
Capes passed away peacefully on February
1, 2022 at home with
family by his side.
Born in Hope River, PEI, on April
7, 1936, to
Gerald and Dorothy (Dornan)
Fleming, Richard
is survived by his cherished wife, Irma
(Handrahan), loving children
Brian (Denise) of
Winsloe, Wendy
(Alan) of
Kingston,
Rick (Alessandra) of
Halifax,
Cindy at
home and Stacy (Chris)
Sheppard of Clarenville.
He is also survived
by 10 grandchildren who
will miss their Papa
dearly: Steve, Tyler,
Dave, Noah, Matilda,
Ken, Brett,
Harper, Sophia and
Ella; and
four great
grandchildren: Patrick, Jack, Tommy, and
Jordan. Also left to mourn
are his brothers and sisters-in-law: Roy
Handrahan (Theresa d.), Patrick
Handrahan (Irene d.), Hughie Handrahan
(Vicky), Mary
(Elmer) Perry, Alfred Handrahan
(Teresa), Eileen
(Bradley) Kinch, Bonnie Anne (Barry) Fraser, Floyd (Pamela) Handrahan,
plus many other
relatives
and good friends.
In addition to his parents, Richard was
predeceased by
his foster
parents, Joe and
Mary Currie of
Richmond, PEI; siblings, Betty (Doug)
Treewin, Bob (Anne), Mary
(Jack) Pickard, Adele
(Al)
Roach, Eddie, and Ronnie
(Barb); his mother
and father-in-law, Alfred and Emily
Handrahan; and sisters
and
bothers-in-law, Eleanor (Edgar d.) Brennan,
Stephen Handrahan and Austin
Handrahan.
Following
in the footsteps of his beloved
brother,
Bob, Richard joined
the army in
1956 where
he served with the
4th Regiment, Royal
Canadian Horse
Artillery in a variety
of technical
roles, and finally
as a Group 4 Surveyor before
being honorably released in
1970. Known
as “Spud” to his buddies, he never
lost his love
for the artillery and
its
strong camaraderie.
It was
while staying
at his brother Bob’s
in-laws, Hector and
Melina Richard of Jude’s
Point, that Richard
met the love of his life,
Irma. They
were married in
1959 in
Pembroke,
Ontario.
In 1970 Richard and Irma
moved home to
PEI, where Richard
found employment in
maintenance at Tignish
Fisheries Co-Op Assn.
Ltd. A consummate self-learner,
he became
the association’s first
licensed power
engineer, and
attained certifications
in refrigeration,
boiler and
oil-burner maintenance, and industrial
electrical systems.
He retired
in
1992.
An active member of the
Tignish community,
Richard received
a life-membership to No. 6 Branch of the Royal Canadian
Legion, taught Defensive
Driving, was
a member of the drama
club, and served
as the Commanding Officer of the Air
Cadet
squadron. Always
willing to serve fellow veterans, he spent countless
hours helping many in
obtaining assistance through
Veterans Affairs.
Richard had a
passion for the outdoors
and truly enjoyed a
wide variety of sports.
Cross-country skiing and
golfing would be his two
favorites. Well into his 80s he
could still be seen blazing a
trail through the woods behind his
house or playing nine holes at the
course in St. Felix.
Family and friends
will certainly
miss his witty sense
of humour, keen intellect and
incredibly big heart.
A
private service will
be
scheduled at a
later
date. If so
desired, a donation to the Kidney
Foundation of Canada or the Western
Hospital Equipment Fund would be
appreciated.
