Johannes (John, Jan)’s Obituary
Johannes (John, Jan) Cornelis Hubertus Herijgers, 78 of Lawrencetown, Annapolis County passed away on January 29, 2022 at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown.
Born on November 3, 1943 on the family farm in Klein Zundert, the Netherlands to his late parents Louis and Cor Herijgers (Verpaalen).
John was a kind and gentle man, hardworking who none the less always made time for his family and friends.
Born to a life of farming, at the age of 24, after marrying Johanna Coremans, he took over the family farm. After 12 years of farming there, in 1980 they decided to move their family to Nova Scotia and buy a larger farm which they worked until 2014.
Though farming was a way of life for him, John had many other interests. He was an avid reader of the news, politics, history and anything else that interested him. Travelling with his family or visiting Dutch family members was a favorite pastime, and he was a big fan of the Annapolis Valley Exhibition and would attend as many days as he could. He also had a reputation as a good dancer on the dance floor.
After retirement he volunteered with the Lawrencetown and District Lions Club and could also be found at historical farming events either competing or demonstrating the old way of doing things. He also got his first paying job in his later 60’s as an apple picker!
John is survived by his wife of 54 years Johanna Francina Herijgers, sons Udo (Judy) Herijgers, Hans (Tracey) Herijgers, daughter Angelique (Kit) Herijgers, and step granddaughter Emilee Wood (Phil).
Also surviving are his siblings Maria Herijgers, Dina (Piet) Nouws, Piet Herijgers, Liza (Piet dec.) van Hoof, Jos Herijgers, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his eldest daughter Marielle (Mark) Whynot, sister Corrie Herijgers and brother Louis Herijgers.
We would like to thank the caregivers and staff of Mountain Lea Lodge for their care and compassion for John.
