Annabelle Amelia Helen Kernohan Thursday December 29th 2022

Kernohan, Annabelle Amelia Helen
Passed away peacefully, at home, in her sleep, on December 29, 2022, in her 85th year. Predeceased by her loving partner, Peter Cowderey. Beloved mother of Christopher (Lee), Kristine (Philip) and Hugh John (Anna). Proud nanny to Emily, Madeline, Paige and Patrick. Born on May 2, 1937 in East York, Ontario, Ann was the youngest of 3 children, raised by a single mother after her father suddenly passed away, mere months before Ann was born. In later years, Ann would go on to raise her 3 children, on her own, further developing the strength of character she would become known for.
As her life continued to hand her some hardships, Ann further relied on her faith in God to help her navigate her path in life.
Ann was a lifelong volunteer; if a job needed to be done somewhere, odds are Ann would volunteer to do it. She took great pride in the latter half of her life being a dedicated volunteer at the Newmarket Senior’s Centre. Whether it was serving on the advisory board, organizing the weekly lunches and summer BBQ’s or hanging out, organizing the craft room, the Senior’s Centre offered Ann a great purpose to her life. It was here, better late than never, that she met the wonderful “Mr. Peter” as he was affectionately known to her children and grandchildren, thus setting up a wonderful, caring, and loving partnership that lasted over 15 years, until his recent death in August 2021.
Ann also spent many decades as a member of the women’s auxiliary for the Royal Canadian Legion. She loved going on outings with her friends that she met there as well as becoming an avid dart player in her local Legion’s league. While she wasn’t able to continue to be as active of a member in the past couple of years, Ann took great pride in being a proud Legion member.
In 2018, Ann was recognized by the province and the town of Newmarket when she was awarded the Senior of the Year award for her years of outstanding service to the community. While she wasn’t one to brag, Ann did take great pride in being recognized and was so proud to have had some of her family there to watch her receive her award that day. This past November, Ann was awarded her 15 year pin at the volunteer recognition dinner at the senior’s centre and she was looking forward to getting back to help out in the new year. Her dedication to her community and her family will forever live on.
A celebration of life will be held at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main Street South, Newmarket on Friday January 6, 2023 from 1-3 with family tributes at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Royal Canadian Legion.
“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”
