It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Malone, CSM, RIM, 83, of Newcastle, Ontario on 21 December 2022 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. Robert was born on 28 September 1939 to William and Elizabeth Malone of Belfast, Northern Ireland. They relocated to Canada after the Second World War, settling in Montreal, Quebec. The son of a naval war veteran, Robert served as a Trooper with the Royal Canadian Army 17th DYRC HUSSARS (7 Recce Regt, Montreal) spurring his lifelong passion for all things military. After graduating from Concordia University in Montreal with a Commerce degree, he had a long and illustrious career in commercial, industrial real estate, administration and operations management with Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, Canarail International, Grand Trunk Railway and Marathon Realties. Throughout his career, he and his family had the opportunity to live in several Canadian cities as well as Chicago, Illinois. Robert married the love of his life Rosemary (nee Hachey) in 1967. They were with each other through all of life’s ups and downs. Robert and Rosemary would go on to have two children, Laura and Amanda. Robert was a wonderful and devoted father, husband and mentor. He always taught his children to be kind and compassionate and supported them throughout the many accomplishments of their lives. Robert held many hobbies including fishing, reading, collecting antiques, preservation of heritage properties and a love of business and political dynamics. He was an avid bird watcher and had a love of trains and Cadillacs. In his later years, Robert was devoted to his local communities of both Mississauga and Clarington, volunteering countless hours on many boards and committees. These included as Chairman of the Property Standards Committee, Benares Historic House, the Transitway Advisory Committee and the Court of Revision, as President of the Newcastle Historical Society and Ratepayers Association and as a board member of the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation and the Durham Regional Land Division Committee. He was also a member of the Orono Crown Land Trust and the Empire Club of Toronto. Robert was predeceased by both of his parents, his beloved daughter Laura, sister Maureen, and many of his relatives in Northern Ireland. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Rosemary, daughter Amanda, son-in-law Douglas, sisters Patricia, Donna, Theresa, and many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by the pack of canine companions that sat up with him every evening to watch classic movies.
In order to benefit retired Canadian Forces veterans in need, Robert requested that donations be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #108 by e-transfer. Please use RCL108Winchester@gmail.com and the password Malone to make a donation. A private celebration of life will be planned for the Spring of 2023.
