Anthony Cano 2022

Anthony Cano
June 14, 1927-Dec 17, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Anthony (Tony) Cano announces his passing on December 17, 2022 at hospice at the age of 95. Tony was born June 14, 1927 in the family home on McIntosh St., the fifth child of nine born to Michael and Mary Cano.
Dad attended Saint Stan’s school and later graduated from Saint Pat’s high school. He worked for Bourke’s Drugstore as a bicycle delivery boy, picked tomatoes in Leamington and at Mahon’s Electric before he began his lifetime employment at the Canadian Pacific Railway, proudly noting that he had collected his pension longer than he had actually worked.
Dad met the love of his life, Clarice, at a wedding. Her date for the evening didn’t dance, so Dad swept her off her feet on the dance floor and so began their life together. They raised their eight children, Cherie Mastronardi, (Jim), Michele Lechkoon, (Bill), Gary (Rosalind), Jim (Lorraine), Danielle Gauci (Mike), Mary Jo Charlebois (Pat), Terry (Jennifer) and Tim (Kristin), plus 23 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and counting. They were happily married for 68 years and she predeceased him by only six weeks. They were devoted to each other and Dad simply couldn’t go on without her.
Early in their marriage, with eight children in tow, Dad and Mom loved the time they spent camping at Provincial Parks, even when backing up the tent trailer was something of a challenge. When Dad retired, he fulfilled his dream of owning a camper van and travelled with Mom to rallies across Canada and the United States, usually stopping at a casino or two somewhere along the route. When not travelling, he enjoyed the Take It Easy Curling League and early summer mornings golfing with old friends.
Dad was a long time member of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a devoted attendee of 8:30 Sunday Mass and a server for countless funerals. He was also a member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus (Council 1447) and could be seen at Christmas midnight Mass, proudly directing traffic in his full regalia. He was an avid volunteer and donated many hours to support various charitable groups; notably Christmas Cheer, Neighbourhood Watch, the Arthritis Society, Heart and Stroke, as well as several Knights of Columbus Charities.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Chartwell Isabella for their kindness over the past months as well as the staff at St Joe’s Hospice for their excellent care.
In light of our mother’s recent passing, a funeral and celebration of Tony’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
