Winnifred Maria “Winnie” Pearl
1929-2022
On June 13, 1933 the
English steamship SS Newfoundland docked at Pier 21 in Halifax. On
board was 4-year-old Winnifred Zahringer with her parents Joseph and
Henrietta, of Handsworth, Birmingham, UK. They landed with little
money and big dreams. Joe found employment in Kentville at the
recently opened CPR hotel, The Cornwallis Inn, as head
waiter.
Winnie attended school
at KCA where she met Harold “Hap” Pearl. They
married on November 8, 1947. Hap and Winnie set up home at 38 King
Street and raised four boys, in an era when it wasn’t
considered dangerous to play outside with friends. She was always
there to listen, advise, clean, cook, sew, drive, console and most
importantly to love, always without judgment. A lifelong Catholic, she
insisted that church had an important role in family life. June 3,
1970 was a particular highlight for Winnie when she received Canadian
Citizenship. Her lifelong interests included gardening, knitting,
quilting, crafting and painting. After the boys were grown, she worked
for a time at the family convenience store Quikmart. Hap and Winnie
also enjoyed the antique community while operating their store, Hidden
Treasures. After moving from her home in 2011, she had loving care at
Hilltop Haven then Evergreen. The family wishes to express their
sincere appreciation to the caregivers and great staff for their care,
kindness and compassion.
Winnie passed away
peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 18, 2022 in
Evergreen Home for Special Care. She was predeceased by husband, Hap
and son, Gary. Left with the life lessons she taught and love she gave
are her sons, Mark (Mona), Stephen (Andrea) and Jon (Glendette);
daughter-in-law, Shirley; grandchildren, Sarah (Craig), Nick (Dawn),
Alex, Matt (Kelly), Ryan (Nicole), Lindsay (Zak), Rylee and Kennedy;
great-grandchildren, Kate, Jaeda, Carsen, Cohen, Claire, Luke, Peyden
and Harper.
Winnie’s
life will be honored with a graveside service for immediate family in
the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Donations in Winnie’s
memory can be made to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in
Kentville. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family
Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
