Reus, Irene Dorothy May Maude (Carol) Née Martin 1929-2022
Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She leaves behind her 5 children – Jennifer (Stanley), Anthony (Sharyn), Beverley (Marc), Christopher and Christine (Rob), 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Also left to grieve is her sister, Ena, as well as many relatives both in Canada and England.
At the young age of 10, during World War II, Irene was one of many children evacuated to the English countryside. She had already showed promise as Head Girl of her grade. At 25 she braved the seas with her baby and toddler as she headed to Montreal to reunite with her husband Reginald to whom she remained married for 68 years until his death in 2019. During the last 30 years she resided in Summerstown, Ontario where many local folks may remember her as an accomplished dart player and as “Carol the Cod” the top awarded bridge player in Cornwall.
Our beloved matriarch was an avid reader, wordsmith, cook, baker, yarnie, seamstress, opera buff, bird/flower lover, all the while nurturing her 5 children and elderly mother. It is no wonder that she easily won the respect of all her friends and neighbours.
She expressed her thanks for her recent care and support given by CCH, St. Joseph’s Villa and Doctor DiCintio. In the face of her irremediable pain and discomfort, she always strove to keep up a brave and pleasant front. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
