It is with the deepest of sorrows that we announce the passing of Mary Grace Kenny-Castonguay on December 14, 2022. Her loving and caring husband, Jean-Paul, and devoted son, Gilles René, were by her side as she whispered her final breath before slipping into an eternal slumber at Montfort Hospital in Ottawa. She was 84. A hawk with a small prey in its claws would later land in the backyard of her suburban home, as if reminding her mourning family – somewhat in the tradition of this spiritual bird – to “get on with it” and “remember the good times”. Born on November 10, 1938, in Bathurst, New Brunswick, to Clara Allen and Patrick Albert Kenny, she was the second oldest of eight children. Her sharp intelligence and feisty independence would see her leave her hometown at a young age, inspired by the opportunities offered by a bigger city. Settling in Ottawa with her husband and young son, she would draw other siblings to the city, welcoming them unconditionally for a coffee or a meal whenever the occasion arose. Devoted to a career in education, she worked as a teacher and later a principal at a number of elementary schools in the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the last being Chapel Hill Catholic School in Blackburn Hamlet. Golfer, hiker, sailor, skier, traveler, bridge player… she was all of these things, and more. She will be sorely missed by family, friends and neighbors. The Funeral Mass will be held at The Annunciation of the Lord Roman Catholic Church, 2414 Ogilvie Road, Ottawa, on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial contributions to your favorite charity would be appreciated.
