Robert Douglas “Doug” Smith, age 61 of Stratford, passed away suddenly at Stratford General Hospital on Saturday, November 26, 2022. Born in Trois -Rivieres, Quebec, son of the late Robert Henry and Margorie Orma (Myhill) Smith. Doug is survived by his true love and best friend Laureen (Andrews) Smith, whom he married on September 1, 1984. Doug was the proud and loving father of Ian Smith and Jake Smith. He will be fondly remembered by his sibling Janet Smith, David (Renea) Smith and Cheryl Denaire. He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Earl and Corrine Andrews, brothers-in-law Frank (France) Andrews, Cal (Heather) Andrews, and Darrin (Corinne) Andrews as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends he called family.
Doug has profoundly touched so many lives that he will be greatly missed by many. He was extremely proud of and dedicated to his boys and Laureen and it was returned to him tenfold. He and Laureen met at Carleton University and married only a year later. Their first adventure was teaching in Chibougamau, Quebec. After 4 years, they decided to move back to Ontario and chose Stratford as the place to live and raise a family. Doug taught physics and science and coached badminton for the next 31 years at St Michael CDSS. It became a huge part of our lives as family was of the utmost importance to Doug and the St Mike’s community was our family. They fed his passion for teaching. People often asked why he would stay so late after school. It was because of the kids, not the prep – if they needed help with their lessons but also to talk about what was important to them and to listen. The kids and staff were more important to him than what his curriculum could teach. That never changed; former students in their late 40s still came up to him to say “Hi Mr. Smith. I’m …..” He always knew them, (even if he couldn’t remember their name!) Doug retired in 2020 but kept up his passion by supply teaching at St Mike’s. Even though it wasn’t a daily event, it made him so happy to be with the St Mike’s community. Laureen, Ian and Jake will forever be proud of him and his memory.
Family and friends are invited to Doug’s visitation on Friday, December 2, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford. Doug’s funeral service will take place on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment to follow in Avondale Cemetery.
