Hind, Evelyn Dawn Elizabeth (nee Ward)
Peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, September 15, 2022 in Russell, Ontario, at the age of 83. Beloved wife of the late Michael Donald Hind. Cherished mother of Donald (Krista), Linda Ayerst (Glenn), Michael John (Anuradha) and Penny. Wonderful grandmother to Derek, Karley, Lauryn Ayerst, Ryan Ayerst, Keith, Rachael, Kumar, Devdas and Jai. Proud great-grandmother to Evelyn, Octavia, and Jack. She is survived by her elder sister, Patricia Lovett of the Isle of Wight, U.K. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Daley Family Funeral Home, 6971 Bank Street, from 1-2 pm on Thursday September 22. A Memorial Service will follow in the Chapel at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.
Evelyn was born in Lambeth, U.K. on the 24th of May, 1939 to Alfred Edward Ward, a carpenter, and Evelyn Charlotte Ward (nee Black). She was very pale and blonde at the time and her mother wrapped her in a white, furry blanket which earned her the nickname “Snowy”. She grew up in East London during World War Two and the post-war period and aspired to be a policewoman. However, she entered the workforce at age 16 and shortly thereafter met Michael Donald Hind across a ping-pong table at a local Church of England Youth Group meeting. They would marry on February 27th, 1960 and after their honeymoon, they emigrated to Canada by ship, to create a new life for themselves.
They eventually settled in Scarborough, Ontario, where Evelyn gave birth to Linda having three years earlier given birth to Donald in Toronto. Their life was full of friends and they lead an active social life including Army Mess events and Rugby Club tournaments and of course the post-match win-or-lose celebration. Michael would work in the insurance business and Evelyn held various jobs. They would later move to Bramalea, Ontario, where Michael John was born, and two years later, Penny came along. In 1976, the whole family pulled up stakes again and moved to Metcalfe, Ontario. In 2020, due to declining health, she decided to move to an apartment in Russell.
Evelyn was a proud woman and loving mother to her children. She was a superb cook and a highly-skilled knitter and sewer. She was incredibly nurturing and her plants, garden and pets all thrived. When Michael created his own insurance brokerage in 1982, Evelyn went back to school and got her broker’s license, outscoring her husband on the test, supporting this new enterprise. She was the consummate hostess and was always welcoming. She would shine when surrounded by friends and family. When her husband died in 2016 after a long illness, her light dimmed a bit as he was the love of her life. To the end, her concerns were about her family and their life without her in it. They were her real life’s work.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Evelyn Hind September 15 2022..
