Obituary
Margaret Rose Spakowski (nee Woychuk)
January 26, 1942-October 26, 2022
Mom passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home with her twin boys Michael and David, lovingly by her side.
Mom was born in Oshawa, Ontario, to John and Anne Woychuk. She was the first child and big sister to her beloved brothers, Ed, and Ted. The family, relocated to their farm in Arborg, Manitoba, when she was a baby.
She was predeceased by her father, mother, and brothers. Ed passed away suddenly on April 3, 2013, and the youngest Ted, sadly passed only one day before mom. Even in her dying days, she would call her little brother Ted, to check on him and let him know she loved him. Her family meant the world to her, and we are comforted knowing she is now surrounded by those that passed before her in heaven now.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Susan, Michelle, Michael (Marc), David and her five grandchildren; Sam, Skyler, Tyra, Josh, and Turner. She loved each of them deeply and wanted the very best for them.
Mom loved dogs a lot. She held a special place in her heart for all of them, especially King, Joe, Chi-Chi, and all her Grand dogs.
Mom started working in healthcare on a psychiatric ward. It was her passion to further her education in Psychiatric Nursing, although fate didn’t take her there. She later worked as a Health Care Aid at Middlechurch Home for more than a decade. She worked hard to care for seniors who couldn’t care for themselves anymore. Those skills were most apparent in her final months, as she taught us all how to care for her.
She was sharp and meticulous with knowing how to lift and manoeuvre her, always reminding us to pause and do it right.
In her final working years, she proudly ran her own cleaning business, known as “Maggie Bee Cleaning.” She loved working for herself, and always had a full slate of clients, as they knew she was one of a kind. No one cleaned as well as her, and it was those special loving touches that made her stand out. ‘Maggie’ became part of their families and she loved to learn about each of them and tell us all about them.
She loved to cook and bake. Her freezer was always full of perogies, holubtsi, and delicious deserts. She raised her children on homemade food and there was always a cold room full of pickles, jams, and preservatives to last throughout the year. Even though some of her family was far away, they all looked forward to Baba’s Christmas gift box each year, which was jammed packed with baking, nuts & bolts, candy, gifts, including gifts for the dogs, of course! Each Christmas, she would take time to send out Christmas cards with a special poem and updates.
She ran a ‘tight ship’ and taught her kids to work hard. There was always work to be done – so that hard-work ethic was passed on to them. With hard work came play. Mom loved to have fun. On weekends she loved to socialize and go dancing. As kids, we remember the Saturday night Polka Party on the radio, her nails, hair, and makeup done. She’d be dressed to the nines, sporting her special jewellery finds. She was set for a Saturday night of music and dancing with her friends,
Always a sports fan, mom loved watching hockey and football. She’d rarely miss a Jets or Bombers game – and cheered loudly for them. When she watched her grandchildren play hockey, she was sure to be the loudest fan in the stands!
Mom loved to garden and gratefully shared her talent as a member of the garden club at St. Timothy’s Church. She took great pride in looking after the flowers, especially the roses – her favourite flower.
In her final months, she was surrounded by love and care. She appreciated the special visits and calls from close friends. Even though her heart was weak, her mind was not. She impressed us all with her sharp mind, spirit, and courage. She was a lady who was true to herself and knew what she wanted. Her wish was to remain at home to her final day – which was granted.
A special thank you to her homecare workers; Terri, Debbie, Breann, Hardneet, Gwendelyn, Eniola, Nanah and Pamela. They catered to her needs in the most loving way. The doctors and nurses at the Grace Hospital (3S) who cared for her with compassion and finally, the staff and friends from St. Timothy’s Church, that cared for her throughout the years. Her faith in God and the church was unwavering. She trusted in the Lord, and we trust she is now in His loving care.
