Edna Douglas
1928-2022
Our beloved mother, Edna A. (McWilliam) Douglas, passed away
peacefully on October 24, with family by her side.
Born in 1928 in Ford’s Mills, N.B. to the (late)
Jennie and Frederick McWilliam, Edna was the last surviving member of
her immediate family.
Edna graduated from Rexton High School in 1945 and attended
Mount Allison University’s Business College from which she
graduated in 1946. Edna then moved to Moncton and worked in the
Salisbury’s Business Office.
It was in Moncton that Edna met her future husband, John T.
Douglas. They married in 1953 and moved to New Glasgow, NS,
Dad’s hometown. In almost 50 years of
marriage, Mom and Dad travelled extensively and enjoyed many happy
times with close friends.
Mom’s priority was always family. She never missed
a sports game, an event, a music lesson or nightly homework. Mom was
thrilled with the birth of her twin grandchildren, John and
Jennifer.
Edna was also actively involved with Trinity United Church.
This included teaching Sunday School, C.G.I.T, the treasurer of Unit
I, UCW and she served as a Trustee of Trinity. She was involved with
numerous charitable organizations. Edna most enjoyed making her Friday
noon hour Meals on Wheels visits and was recognized by the Town of New
Glasgow for her volunteer contribution to seniors.
Curling at the Bluenose Curling Club was one of
Mom’s favorite pastimes, both for the enjoyment of the sport
and the many friendships she made. Edna was President of the Bluenose
Ladies Curling Club and was made an Honorary Lifetime Member for her
many contributions to the Club.
Edna also loved to cross country ski, garden, play bridge
with the same friends for several decades, and spend summers at
Melmerby.
Mom is best described as a real lady.
Left to remember Mom are her children: Heather (Fred), Libby,
Rob (Donna) and grandchildren: John (Krissi) and Jennifer (Rob), as
well as several nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, John T. Douglas; her
brothers and their wives: Tom (Freda), Arnold (Margaret), James
(Myrtle), Ron (Audrey) and her sister-in-law, Mary (Peter)
McInnes.
A special thanks to her dear friend Colleen Rafuse,
caregivers Melanie and Sondra, as well as the staff at Vimy Court who
loved and cared for Mom.
As per Edna’s request, there will be no visitation.
Funeral service will take place at Trinity United Church, New Glasgow,
NS at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 28th. Masks are encouraged. Private
burial will take place at a later date. If so desired, donations may
be made to the Cancer Unit (Aberdeen Hospital) c/o Aberdeen Health
Foundation or a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the
direction of R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Edna Douglas 19282022..
