In Celebration of
Gina Morrone
April 14, 1930 –
October 20, 2022
It is with immense sadness and a profound sense of loss that our family announces the passing of our dear mother and matriarch, Gina Morrone (nee Longo). On Thursday, October 20, 2022 she passed peacefully at home with both her daughters by her side. She has joined her beloved husband Emilio, who predeceased her in 2014. Loving and devoted mother of Carmela (Albert Giardini) and Diana. Proud and doting Nonna to grandson Jordan and granddaughters Brynn and Bria. Bonus Nonna to Bianca, Alissa and Alanna. Dear sister of Frank Longo (Eva). Predeceased by her siblings Marietta Longo (Francesco), Vincenzo Longo (Lydia), Amelia Guglielmello (Salvatore), Carmelina Cristiano (Franco), and Eduardo Longo. She will also be very sadly missed by sisters in law Giulietta Longo and Rita Morrone, her many nieces and nephews, large extended family, and an amazing circle of friends, near and far.
She was born in Trenta, Cosenza, Calabria in 1930. Arriving in Mimico with her sister Amelia in 1952, she joined her brothers to start a new life. Within 30 days of his arrival she married her sweetheart Emilio in June of 1954. Full of hopes and dreams, they started their married life together in Canada. She always worked hard, striving to make a better life in her new country. She was the epitome of strength and resilience and adapted with love and grace, to whatever life brought her way. Gina was a kind, generous, and compassionate woman with a profound sense of family, faith and responsibility. She carried herself with dignity and had a sharp wit that endeared her to all she knew. She was always elegant with an effortless sense of style – until the end! Her love language was food, and all who crossed her threshold were the benefactors of a warm welcome and a delicious meal or sweet treat, whether it be at her table in Etobicoke or her sunny kitchen in West Palm Beach. We are proud to have loved her and to have been loved so unconditionally by her. She leaves that legacy of love and it will continue to nurture and sustain all those she touched.
Special thanks to family physician Dr. Ted Sosiak and to Dr. Nadia Salvo and Nursing Team 4 working through the Dorothy Ley Hospice, whose help and support contributed to keeping Gina comfortable and surrounded by family and friends in her own home in her final days.
