Charles William Ferguson June 27 1948January 20 2022

After 8 1/2 years of prostate cancer, Charlie fought the good fight to the end, never wanting to quit trying.
Charlie was the loving husband of 36 years and best friend to Elaine. He was the proud father of Jessica Drury (Peterborough) and of Shaun Ferguson (St. Catharines). Stepfather of Jason Scott (BC) and Jeremy Scott (Wisconsin). Grandfather of Bracken Scott-Police and Noah Ollmann-Scott (BC); Emma Drury and Noah Drury (Peterborough). As the youngest of 7 in his family, Charlie was baby brother to Don Ferguson (Port Perry) and Joan Demick-Morel (Parry Sound). Friend and Brother-in-law of Gayle & Larry Brown (Peterborough), and Bonnie Nagel (Henrietta, NY). Charlie had many nieces & nephews and relatives in BC and Ontario.
We had many happy family reunions over the years and Charlie will be fondly remembered by the remaining Ferguson clan. The family reunions were the big event of every year, at least for our family. Every year Charlie would host these reunions with photos of past years & slide shows on his computer. The Keurig coffee maker was a big hit for several years. Shaun entertained with stunning magic shows.
Our family pet, Dave the Cat will miss being the centre of Charlie’s world. Dave will always have a place to sleep at the end of Charlie’s bed.
Charlie’s working career spanned more than 55 years in the plumbing and heating industry. He began working for several different companies in Peterborough and Toronto area. In 1985, Charlie started as a salesman at Bardon Supplies Limited in Belleville. There were very few employees at that time and he forged many life-long friendships with management and staff there. While living in Tweed, he traveled mostly to areas in the north. Those days, he contacted customers and head office via phone booth. With the introduction of cell phones, he carried 2 just because he wanted to. Charlie loved calling on customers in his territory and in good humour, became known as the unofficial “Mayor of Tweed”. Few people knew his nickname was “Moose”.
Charlie was transferred to Niagara in 2000 as Branch Manager for Bardon Supplies Plumbing & Heating Wholesalers. He prided himself as an organizer and “fixer” of any problem that cropped up. He needed many “gadgets” throughout the years that he claimed helped him in the business. Charlie liked his toys and his computers, laptops, electronics and hundreds of pens. He would only buy a shirt that had a pen pocket. He accumulated more ball caps from customers than anyone should have. Charlie seemed happiest at this time in his life. He looked forward to going to work every day, sharing his knowledge and experience, and enjoyed the challenges, like inventory weekends.
Charlie exited Bardon at the top of his career as Regional Manager, Niagara. He was compelled to retire in March, 2020, as COVID was just starting to affect businesses. He was undergoing further chemo treatments that were very hard to manage. Prior to retirement, Charlie spent most of his waking hours at the office, working with the finest people he ever met. They became caring friends and more like family to both of us, especially Charlie’s “work wife”, Kelly Reece.
In his earlier years, Charlie loved camping, especially in nature settings like Algonquin Park. He loved the peace & the outdoors sounds, particularly canoeing. There were several family holidays spent enjoying the summer weather outdoors. Most of these trips involved packing a huge van full of “camping supplies”. He loved roughing it; Shaun & I preferred the sites with electricity. Charlie also loved photography. He once had a homemade darkroom to develop some of his pictures. We recently uncovered a few small containers of slides and there are still some slides he didn’t get to see. Of course he had many cameras because one was never enough. Charlie enjoyed drawing & sketching in his spare time. He was an avid amateur radio fan (VE3WCF). We have quite the antenna in our backyard! Charlie had a passion for downhill skiing and his last run was in Vermont a few years ago. In our travels to different cities & countries, he just loved renting a Segway to “wheel around” and see the sights. We did some traveling and made a trek to the southern U.S. almost every year. After 2019, his health declined and his strength dwindled. In 2020 we were looking forward to seeing family again, but unfortunately cancer and COVID had other plans.
Charlie was not defined by his illness and refused to acknowledge defeat. We are so proud of how he handled each appointment at the hospital, year after year, never wanting to quit taking those pills, or those treatments or the many scans and x-rays. We are indebted to Dr. Michael Levesque, Dr. Hallock & staff at Walker Family Cancer Centre. Thanks to Wellspring in Fonthill for the Prostate Cancer Support group help. Our gratitude to Monica and Shelly at Hospice Niagara, Angel Nurses Kim & Jocelyne, and all the LHIN support from Laurie & PSW’s – Aaron, Jessica, Shelly, not-Audrey;), Mark, Tracy, Laurie, Grace-lyn, Joseph, Talia, Jennifer, Marie, Carol, Sandy & anyone connected with caring for Charlie while he was at home – we appreciate each of you!
With the support of friends near & far, our family had the best before, during and after care for Charlie. Words cannot express our appreciation to Mary & Andy Millar, Lydia Dunkley, Cindy Moreton, and Lucas Reid. We also have wonderful neighbours. We treasure your friendship.
We are so grateful to Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines to those gentle souls who care so much and share their hearts with all the residents & their families. Charlie & I spent 59 days there with superb care by the staff, volunteers, chef Patrick and the cleaning crew. Hospice became my second home & I appreciate the compassion that each person showed our family.
If interested in making a donation, we would appreciate they be made to your favorite charity or health care support, or Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines. Please, no flowers.
It was Charlie’s wish that no funeral service be held. Cremation has taken place. The family will have a private gathering when appropriate.
Charlie’s wishes were that his ashes be scattered in a nature setting during the summer.

  1. Dear Elaine, Jessica and Shaun,
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Charlie. I will always cherish my memories of him – I am with Anne Marie… coolest uncle ever. What I will remember most was his love of family. He and Elaine drove through a snow storm to be with his sister Joan to celebrate her 85th birthday. Even in his declining health he travelled to visit with Joan – the fact she no longer recognized him did not dampen his resolve to spend one last beautiful, summer afternoon with her.
Our thoughts are with you and your family. – Lorraine, Kara, Megan & Thomas
