Sorel Gottfried
Born in Montreal in 1934 to Lena and Moishe Dickstein, died peacefully in Ithaca, New York on December 7, 2021, surrounded by her family. Sorel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Kurt Gottfried, her children David and Laura, grandsons Solomon and Leo Gottfried, granddaughters Mia and Meg Really, sister -in- law Ilse Matalon and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brother Joe (Yossel) Dickstein and brother-in-law Tass Matalon.
Sorel attended the Folk Shule People’s School in Montreal as a child and maintained her Yiddish language knowledge all her life. She took great delight in peppering her speech with pithy Yiddish turns of phrase. Sorel earned a BA in Political Science from McGill University, an area of interest that continued throughout her life. She also obtained a Masters in Speech Pathology and developed a specialization with swallowing. Sorel was a close collaborator with Kurt in all areas of his professional life. She was an unofficial editor of his published work, and an important advisor for Kurt’s work with The Union Of Concerned Scientists, of which he was co-founder. Sorel was a fervent advocate for women’s rights and was a long-time supporter of The League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood and Emily’s List, to name a few. Sorel loved the outdoors, whether hiking, canoeing, or skiing and was an avid gardener and birder. During her last year, Sorel’s greatest joy was feeling the warmth of the sun coming through her window.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Sorel Gottfried 2022..
