David Shaw 1935-2022
It is with profound sadness and with heavy hearts that we are announcing the passing of David Cameron Shaw
with his beloved wife of 66 years Catherine Shaw (Purcell) along with his daughter Michele at his side at Camp
Hill Veterans Hospital on Sept 15, 2022. Born on April 19, 1935 in London, Ontario, David is predeceased by
his parents James and Helen (Lamb)and his birth mother Charlotte Brydges along with his siblings Robert and
Shirley and son David.
David leaves behind Peter and his wife Sandi (Holmes), Patricia and her husband John Santos and Michele
along with 8 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grand Children.
David enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954 and was awarded the Canadian Decoration in 1966 and
retired from the RCN in 1979. He opened a drapery installation business in 1979 and successfully operated it
until he retired in 1994.
David joined the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans of Canada (ANAVETS) in 1979 and for over 34 years in
that association he received from Dominion Command its highest honours, Life Member in 2000, Order of
Service in 2003 and Award of Merit in 2006 for his work for veterans and his community. David was also
awarded the American Legion Friendship Award for his devotion to veterans in 1982 and became President of
Dartmouth Unit 349 in the same year.
David became Group Commander in 1983 for the annual Remembrance Church Service Association in
partnership with the ANAVETS Association.
David was elected President of Nova Scotia Command ANAVETS in 1986 and in 1987 became ANAVETS
Association representative on the Camp Hill Geriatric Trust Fund.
David was elected King Lion of the Dartmouth East Lions Club, and in 1999 he was elected President of the
Canadian Naval Air Armourers Association.
The Queen Elizabeth ll Golden Jubilee Medal was awarded to David for his support of Nova Scotia Veterans.
In 2006 David was elected to the post of President of Nova Scotia ANAVETS for the second time.
David became President of the Veterans Organization Services Committee in 2012 continuing his work with
Nova Scotia veterans and their community. He used these opportunities to become a strong advocate for the
well being of our veterans and their families and was well known and respected in the Veterans Community as
a person who can get things accomplished.
David was nominated twice for the Order of Nova Scotia for his work with Veterans.

Catherine.
