Mary Lou McKenzie 2022

Obituary for
Mary Lou McKenzie
It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden and unanticipated passing of Mary Lou McKenzie, at the age of 61 years. Mary Lou passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, while at work and in service as Site Director at Sturgeon Community Hospital, in St. Albert, Alberta.
Mary Lou was a remarkable woman who significantly impacted the lives of many in positive ways. She will be remembered for her kind and generous heart, beautiful laugh, nurturing presence and relationship centered values. She was a caring, intuitive, and strong woman who lived each day wholeheartedly. Collectively, our enduring love for Mary Lou will transcend this incomprehensible loss. May we celebrate her life’s contributions and the legacy of love she leaves behind in the hearts and minds of those who knew her and loved her.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Lake; son, Ryan (Sammi); and precious three-month-old grandson, Wyatt; mother, Ollie; and siblings, Craig (Jackie), Donna (Sean) and Sandy (Steve). She will be deeply missed by many others, including: Erika (Joel); Carlo, Laureena and Thaddeus; Melissa, Danny, Tony, Joe and their significant others, who she loved like her own; numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives; friends, colleagues and community. Mary Lou is predeceased by her adoring father, Hubert.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and colleagues who were present on Thursday, September 8, 2022, that were tasked with the difficulty of providing Mary Lou and her family with steadfast compassionate care.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton.
A legacy fund is being established with MacEwan University to honour Mary Lou’s commitment to the next generation of nursing leaders as they strive towards reaching their full potential. The family will gratefully accept any memorial donations directed to the contribution of Mary Lou’s legacy fund for post secondary nursing students. Donation details will be announced at the Celebration of Life.

  1. I cannot yet accept this loss. ML was such an important person and force of nature. She was more than a great leader, she was one of us. Everyone who knew her was a better person for it. Good bye & thank you for making me a better nurse & more importantly a better person. If you are lucky you meet one true nursing leader in your career. I was lucky. You truly set the bar. XO

  2. I just heard the news about Mary Lou and I am heart broken. I although I didn’t work with Mary Lou directly, we did occasionally work together, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of that time. She was a such a joy and will truly be missed. Please accept my deepest condolences.
