Obituary
Wonderful grandma, Anni Weitmann lived almost a century in this city she knew so well. She outlived her husband, Helmut Otto Weitmann, who passed away in January 1996. She leaves behind her son James Reinhold and her daughter Kathleen Roe (son-in-law Richard).
Anni immigrated to Calgary from Germany with her husband Helmut in 1950 after WWII. Despite many challenges they persevered and assimilated into life in Western Canada. They both quickly learned to read and write in English, and they opened their first grocery store on 4th St. SW, “Little Gem Confectionary”. Anni also worked at the original Children’s Hospital and managed the grocery store.
Anni’s Catholic faith sustained and guided her throughout her life. She was ever grateful to the Franciscan nuns who raised her in the orphanage where she grew up.
The joy of Anni’s life were her six grandchildren, Aaron, Thomas, Bernadette, Mary, Joseph, and Anthony Roe, whom she loved and cherished throughout the years. Grandma beat the odds with her lifelong habit of smoking. Her sunny disposition made up for any of life’s hardships. The family is forever grateful to Anni’s son Jim who was her caregiver to the very end.
Anni was always willing and eager to drop whatever she was doing to help and focus on the needs of others. She was a peaceful, optimistic, and accepting person.
We love and miss our dear grandma, Anni! We are heartbroken to lose her, but as she always said, “Jesus, I trust in You!”
