Rusi was born in Poona, India on the 6th of April 1928 and died peacefully at Celtic Court, Sydney NS surrounded by his loving family on 20th August 2022 at the ripe old age of 94. He was an accomplished doctor, sportsman, musician, storyteller and prominent singer of the second verse of “happy birthday”. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
After completing his medical degree in Bombay in the early 1950’s he completed his pediatrics training in London and Edinburgh. He returned to India in 1958 to marry the love of his life Sheroo Keravala. In 1959 they had their first son Farokh followed by their second son Reeshad in 1961. During this time he established a very successful medical practice, rising to the rank of Professor of Pediatrics at Bombay University. Rusi instilled his voracious curiosity and thirst for learning in his children. Farokh and Reeshad would frequently be spotted with Rusi while he was rounding in the hospital or trying to teach them to drive a stick shift (at the tender age of seven).
Wanting a better life for his wife and children he made the difficult decision to pack up their entire life and move to Canada in 1972 to teach at the IWK in Halifax. He subsequently set up a successful practice in Dartmouth with a very special interest in behavioural issues in children. Rusi was an active member of the Rotary Club and an accomplished flutist in the CFDR station band. He was an active member the Zoroastrian community of the HRM, frequently hosting legendary “Parsi Parties”. After retiring in 1999 he travelled the world with his wife Sheroo. Ever the indulgent storyteller, Rusi was at his best when he was theatrically entertaining a crowd of family with stories of his amazing life. If you speak with any of his children or grandchildren they will all have their own personal favorite “Rusi story”. Rusi was blessed with many passions in his life. he loved painting, collecting knives and other curios, dogs and the movies. Sharing these passions with friends and family would bring him great joy and happiness.
Upon Sheroo’s death in 2013 he moved to Sydney to be closer to his family, beginning a new chapter of his life. After moving into Parkland he was finally allowed to display his impressive knife and sword collection out in the open uninhibited by his wife. His final days were spent surrounded by family and loved ones at Celtic Court.
Rusi will be dearly missed by his two sons, Farokh (Refina), Reeshad (Nicole) and his special daughter-in-law, Mary-Anne Campbell (Michael Schinzig). He was so proud of his grandchildren, Colin (Amy), Catherine (Michael), Hannah (Shain), Patricia (Johnathon), Connor, Patrick and Margaret (Malcolm). His eyes lit up with joy at the sight of his great-grandchildren, Ian, Isabel and Clara. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews spread across the globe.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Sheroo, his parents, Jehangir and Jer, his sister, Perin (Late Col. Adisher Tarapore), brother, Hosi (Nurgesh) and nieces, Jeroo and Zarin.
Parsi Zoroastrian death rituals are being performed in Mumbai and Pune organized by his extended family.
Cremation is entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel.
A celebration of his long, happy and successful life will be held at the Dobson Yacht Club on Sunday, September 18 from 3 to 5 pm. Be prepared to share your Rusi stories!
