Obituary
Kenneth James Sunderland, an aspiring astronomer, birder, canoeist, skier, woodworker, ballroom dancer, maple syrup producer, beekeeper, mill operator, educator, and endlessly curious learner, died peacefully on August 21, 2022, at Hospice Peterborough surrounded by love. He was 67.
Ken’s memory is dearly cherished by his wife Linda (nee Wells), and his children Mary (John Lee), Mark (Kathryn Connelly), Laura (Jeff Cooper), and Katherine. His five grandchildren Theo, Evie, George, Simon, and Millie will miss his love and fun. Ken is survived and will be greatly missed by his mother Mildred Craig (nee Warren) and sister Sarah Craig. The extended Warren, Place, and Wells families will miss their adventurous cousin, uncle, and brother-in-law. Ken is predeceased by his fathers Kenneth Lambert Sunderland (d. 1959) and Alan Craig (d. 2020).
Born on April 4, 1955, in Brockville, Ken enjoyed growing up on the mighty St. Lawrence River with its unparalleled water sport opportunities. It was at Brockville Collegiate where he serendipitously met his lifelong partner, Linda. After earning his Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Western Ontario, Ken spent 32 years teaching physics and mathematics at Lakefield College School, during which time he also earned a Master of Science in physics from Trent University. During retirement he enjoyed pursuing many diverse hobbies in Peterborough and at the cottage on Charleston Lake.
Ken received world-class care after his glioblastoma diagnosis in 2018. The family wants to thank the medical teams at: Kingston General Hospital (surgeon Dr. Ryan Alkins), Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Drs. Warren Mason and Normand Laperriere and the whole team on the 18th floor), and Hospice Peterborough (Drs. John Beamish and Lauren Morelli and the entire staff). A true scientist, Ken enthusiastically participated in all studies and clinical trials that were available to him throughout his treatment.
A service will be held Monday, August 29 at 2 p.m. at Highland Park Funeral Centre in Peterborough with a reception to follow.
