It is with deep sorrow and love that we mourn the passing of Chris McQuarrie, our dear husband, nephew, grandson, son-in-law, brother in-law, cousin, and friend, who died on August 12, 2022, at the age of 27 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Laura; aunt Amber and uncle Dave; close cousins Alec and Sarah; Grandmother Julie; parents in-law Martin and Loretta; sister in-law Emily; dear friends Sarah and Jeremiah; as well as numerous relatives and friends. He will also be profoundly missed by his friends in the Hexagon tabletop gaming community.
There are not enough words to convey Chris’ spirit, and to say Chris was kind and thoughtful does not capture the extent to which he wholly loved and gave of himself. From a young age, his mischievous nature brought joy and amusement to those who loved him. His infectious laugh, occasionally head-scratching but always delightful sense of humour, and quirky personality let everyone around him know that it was okay to be themselves. His extraordinary imagination, fueled by avid exploration of worlds beyond through fiction and biking the outdoors, was channeled into his animated storytelling in Dungeons and Dragons and his deeply meaningful handcrafted gifts. In his work with unhoused individuals and his “work kids,” he gave the best of himself to champion justice for the marginalized. His passion was his strength, and he used it to dedicate his life to breaking chains. He leaves the world having made it a better place.
In the final years of his life especially, Chris fought hard in a battle against mental illness. His staff-spinning — of fire, ice, and light — expressed a dance of courage befitting of a Scottish Lord. He shared about his journey with a candor and emotional intelligence that touched everyone he met. His family and friends will remember his strength, resilience, and wisdom, and will be forever grateful for the gift he gave to be with them for as long as he was.
A memorial bonfire and candlelight vigil will be at held 8:00 p.m. on August 19, 2022, at ᐄᓃᐤ ÎNÎW River Lot 11∞ Indigenous Art Park in Edmonton, Alberta.
