Mary’s Obituary
MARY CATHERINE COX
On July 1 we said goodbye to the best person we have ever known, Mary Catherine (MacEachern) Cox – although she never liked to say goodbye, but rather “see you soon.” Born in Mabou, Cape Breton, Mary was a beloved granddaughter, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, niece, and loyal friend to many. A woman of deep faith, Mary was a member of the Saint Thomas Catholic Church community in Shelburne, NS, for 60 years. She lived her faith every day of her life, through her compassion, kindness, generosity and devotion to family and friends. Mary saw goodness in everyone, found beauty everywhere. She loved life and the many blessings it brought, she made friendships easily and kept them for life.
Mary is survived by her husband Percy and grown children John, Cathy, Rhonda (Colin Chaput) and David (Kim Meegan). She made their house a home, a place where friends were always welcome to visit, share a meal or spend the night. She was a cherished grandmother to Catherine, Emmaline, Olivia, Finlay and Sullivan – whose favourite place was Nana’s kitchen, where the world’s best cookies and cakes were made with love.
Mary is also survived by her siblings Hugh (Inge, Russell ON), John Alec, Jim (Donna, Colwood BC) and Anna (Gary Jollimore, Liverpool NS). Mary was predeceased by her parents, John and Catherine (Annie), and brothers Tommy (Catherine, Port Medway NS) and Johnny (Roxena, Liverpool NS).
Throughout her illness, Mary was lovingly cared for at home by her family, in particular Percy and John, whose dedication to her comfort and care was beautiful to behold. Special thanks to the palliative team and the VON nurses who went above and beyond to care for Mary at home every day, throughout a pandemic, until she passed away.
Raising her children, Mary imparted nuggets of advice – fondly referred to as “Mom-isms” – which seem simple enough but offer great insight into how to be a good and decent person.
Be kind.
Say thank you.
Give the biggest piece of cake to someone else.
If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.
If something is worth doing, do it well.
You can do anything you set your mind to.
Leave the place a little better than you found it.
Beautiful Mary, you did.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday August 20th, 2022 from the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Shelburne @ 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow in the Anglican Church Hall, Shelburne. Father Pat O’Meara officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the VON or a charity of your choice, and do a random (or planned) act of kindness in Mary’s memory.
