Helen Smith 2022

Helen Smith
August 4, 1939 – August 12, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful, but sudden passing of our treasured mother, Helen Mary Smith (nee Fitzgerald) on August 12, 2022, at the age of 83 years.
We have no doubt Mom was met at heavens gate by her beloved Ken, who passed in 2017. He was mom’s true love and best friend.
Mom was also predeceased by her parents Patrick and Gertrude Fitzgerald; parents-in-law Douglas and Freda Smith; brothers Jim (Eileen), Stan (Edith), Gus, John, and Ron Fitzgerald; sisters Joan Tuff (Frank) and Eileen Williams; brothers-in-law George Field and Graham Smith.
Leaving to mourn her treasured family of which she was always the centre; two devoted daughters Karen (Paul Quigley) and Lynn (John Langer). Her pride and joy, three grandchildren Ryan Quigley, Andrea Quigley (Darryl Dearing) and Lauren Quigley (Luke Jones). As well as special canine/feline grandchildren Rijke, Russell and Monty.
Sisters Margaret Field, Marie Fitzgerald and Gladys Hedderson (Ed). Brothers-in-law Rick Williams; Arthur Smith (Shirley); sisters-in-law Eleanor Fitzgerald and Ramona Day, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The love story of our parents began in St. John’s when Dad was stationed at Torbay Airport as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and Mom was working as a telephone switch board operator. Dad’s career took their lives to 3 different provinces, and eventually back home to Newfoundland in 1979. A promise he made and kept to Mom.
Mom shared her love and will be deeply missed by her many treasured friends, especially childhood friend Edith Peach and family; long time friends Inez Cossaboon, Agnes Brien, Bill Heiwegen and their families; adored neighbours Don & Anne Pennell, Arvind & Pramila Acharya and their families.
Mom was also blessed to have a unbreakable bond with her favorite cousin and night time puzzle buddy Marg Power; and her cherished nephew Ron Owens.
Mom was so proud of her family and enjoyed her time with all of us. She was a wonderful cook and baker, loved a game of cards, and enjoyed shopping excursions. Our lives have forever been enriched by sharing in her love.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, Torbay, on Monday, August 15th, 2022, with visitation from 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass at Mary Queen of Peace Church on Torbay Road, Tuesday, August 16th, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. Inurnment to follow at a later date at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Topsail Rd.
Flowers gratefully accepted or a donation in Mom’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Emergency department and 4 South A Health Science Centre for your kindness and compassion shown to Mom during her brief illness. We would also like to thank Mom’s niece Elaine Foley who held a special place in Mom’s heart. Your visit with Mom meant the world to her.
When you see the moon again, think of our Mom. She loved its presence! The brighter the better! We love you Mom…..to the moon and back.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Helen Smith 2022..
