Petras Peter Skučas January 5th 1923 August 7th 2022

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Peter Skučas. With loving family at his side, he passed peacefully on August 7, 2022, in his 100th year. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 71 years, Alyda. His children Algis (Marlene), Raymond (Shelley), Linda and daughter-in-law Christine. His five grandchildren, Rebecca (Emerson), Nancy (Eric), Joanna (Ian), Jon (Kristie), Sienna, and five great grandchildren, Elliana, Mica, Exavier, Issac, and Elliot. He is also survived by his four half-sisters Birute, Grazina, Albina, Aldona and half-brother Vytas, his sister-in law Ruta, the Sova Family in Wales Great Britian and many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his son Peter (2019), brothers Albinas, Kastantas, sisters Magdalena, Domicele, half-sisters Janina and Izabela. Peter was born on a farm in the Marijampole region of Lithuania to Jonas and Ona Skučas, the second of their five children. His mother passed when he was nine years old. He endured the war years in Lithuania until he was able to flee by himself towards the west in 1944, eventually arriving in England in 1947 as a displaced person. In 1950 after learning sufficient English, he became a student nurse in a teaching hospital, graduating as a RN in 1953. He met Alyda, and they were married in July of 1951, the following year Algis was born, and they bought a townhome in Egham near Staines. In 1954 son Peter was born. In August of 1960, Peter and his family immigrated to New Westminster, BC, Canada. They moved to the adjacent community of Burnaby and purchased a house. Raymond was born in 1963 and Linda in 1967. Peter and Alyda left the family home in 2014 and moved to an apartment in New Westminster. Peter was a great believer in hard work and honoring his Lithuanian agricultural roots. He enjoyed many past times including gardening, carpentry, camping, beekeeping, wine making and hiking the mountains of British Columbia. He enjoyed singing in a Lithuanian choir and friendships within the local Vancouver Lithuanian community. In the 1970s he spent many of his days off happily building the cabin he was dreaming of, near Mt Baker in Washington State. After retiring in 1982 he became even more active enjoying golfing, curling, lawn bowling, more camping trips and many family reunions. Peter was proud of his Lithuanian heritage and his commitment to hard work with meticulous dedication to tasks at hand that are instilled in all of us. Our family wants to extend our deepest gratitude to Peter’s daughter Linda. In the last few years of his life, in his declining health it was Linda’s dedicated, loving and tireless effort to care for him that allowed Peter to have a reasonable quality of life. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday August 17, 2022, at 11 am at Kearney’s Columbia-Bowell Chapel located at 219 6th Street, New Westminster, BC. A reception will be held after the service. Family requests that masks be worn at the Funeral Service.
