Passed peacefully at Tiffany Village August 5, 2022 surrounded by family, including sister-in-law Elsie Chapman and husband Bob.
Leaving to mourn beloved wife of 63 years, Betty, sons, Martin (Katherine Crosbie), Tony (Wilson Roberts) and Edward (Nick Bird), grandchildren, Griffin and Emily, sister, Cela Loder and brother, Pat.
Martin was born in Point-au-Gaul, Newfoundland, the first son for fisherman and boat builder, William and his wife, Rebecca. He was joyfully welcomed by his parents and a number of older sisters. At 14, after various bouts of sea sickness he recognized that fishing was not his calling and moved to St. John’s to live with his sister.
Living not far from his sister’s home was Elizabeth (Betty) Clancey whom he would later marry on June 6, 1959. Three sons followed and eventually two grandchildren.
Martin joined the Canadian Armed Forces and did two tours with United Nations peace keeping missions in the Middle East. After leaving the military he started what would be a life long career in the Grocery business.
He was hard working and had an entrepreneurial spirit with ventures including landscaping, record distribution and concert promotion.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for decades and participated in various charitable and community projects, including the Janeway.
Martin was always quick with a story and lines that would put a smile on your face. He was a kind and generous person, always ready to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Most of all he was a fine husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
Many thanks to the staff of Tiffany Village for the kind, compassionate care given to Martin and Betty.
Funeral Service to take place from Caul’s Chapel, LeMarchant Road on Tuesday, August 9th at 1 p.m. and can be viewed live from vimeo.com/737297452. Interment to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Martin’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Martin Joseph Lockyer 2022..
