It is with profound sadness that the family of Ken Cush announce his passing on July 30, 2022.
Born in Calgary, Ken was the eighth of nine children of John Cush and Eileen Sullivan. As a young man he was an avid golfer and had a keen interest in hockey. At the age of 16 he was awarded a hockey scholarship to Colorado College and to this day he is the youngest ever participant in the NCAA men’s college hockey championship.
After college in the US, he attended the University of Alberta graduating from law school in 1957. He was appointed a Provincial Court Judge in 1969 where he sat until his retirement on his 70th birthday in 2003.
Ken loved music, especially playing piano (self-taught) and singing in choirs or just singing for anyone who would listen. He was a member of the St. Agnes church choir for four decades. He also had a passion for horse racing and was a fixture at the Northlands racetrack for many years. He will be dearly missed by family and friends for his kind and gentlemanly manner.
Ken is survived by his 4 daughters: Maureen (Bill Daye), Donna (Dwight) Bazin, Carolyn (Jouni) Nieminen and Nancy; close friend Lorna Offet; beloved grandchildren: Tanner, Amy, Peter, Aidan, Miia and Sloane; sisters-in-law Alice Cush and Marianne Lysenko; brothers-in-law Don Cameron and Val, Bernie and Jim Merchant and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Mona, his wife of 53 years; grandson Tyler Bazin; and siblings: Harold, Catherine, Eileen, Jack, Theresa, Ron, Shirley and Joe.
A Visitation will be held on Friday August 12, 2022, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Connelly McKinley, 10011 – 114 Street, Edmonton.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at 11:00 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 10826 – 62 Avenue, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken’s memory to Catholic Social Services Sign of Hope Campaign or MS Society of Canada – Alberta Division.
