Mary Lourdes MacDonald
1929-2022
Mary Lourdes MacDonald, wife of the late Claude MacDonald of Miramichi, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the age of 93.
Born in the former town of Chatham, NB, on February 7, 1929, she was the daughter of the late William and Viola (Doyle) Smith.
Mary was a dedicated School Teacher, having started her career in a one room schoolhouse in Manitoba, and ending it many years later teaching Math and then English at the local High School (James M. Hill Memorial). She loved teaching and would help any and all who needed her. As well as being a teacher and mentor to her students, she also helped “raise” the many kids at the beach. The cottage was a haven for family, friends and strangers alike, and all were welcome. Her molasses cookies are loved far and wide.
Mary was very active during her lifetime, whether in France where she sailed home with 4 kids under 5, or living here on the Miramichi amongst her family. In her later years she taught herself how to play guitar, which entertained many at the cottage’s famous parties. She loved and was loved deeply by her family and friends. She will be sorely missed by all.
Mary is survived by five children: Gail MacDonald, Gerry (Joan) MacDonald, Cathy MacDonald, Judy Cable, and Lynn (Gerard) Mercure, all of Miramichi; four grandchildren: Nathan, Kiera, Jarrad, and Chase; five great-grandchildren: Valentina, Ethan, Lexi, Zane, and Kye; two sisters: Dot Creamer of Miramichi, Donna Bailey of Brantford, ON, and one brother, Allie Smith of Bartibog.
Besides her husband, Claude, she is predeceased by her son, Edward John MacDonald; sisters: Betty O’Neill, Zita Smith, Dottie Kennedy; and brother, Jimmy Pallen.
A public visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, NB, from 2-4 PM, and 7-9 PM. A public Mass of Christian Burial will occur on Thursday, July 28th, 2022, at 11 AM, at St. Michael’s Basilica, with The Reverend Father Leon Creamer, and The Reverend Father John Keoughan as Celebrants. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
