Ross’ Obituary
George Ross Ryan of Markdale passed away at Grey Bruce Health Services, Markdale, on Friday, July 8, 2022 just 4 days shy of his 89th birthday. Beloved husband of Joan Ryan (Copeland). Cherished father of Andrea Ryan and her husband Michael Johansen of Ottawa. Predeceased by son Kevin Ryan in 1984. Ross will be sadly missed by brother Curtis Ryan of Kitchener and fondly remembered by nieces, a nephew, extended family and friends.
Born in East York, Ross moved to Markdale at the age of 4 and grew up working in his parents’ grocery store, Ryan’s Grocery. He married Joan in 1955 and became owner of the grocery store in 1959. After selling the store in 1970, he worked as the courier for the Grey County Board of Education from 1970 to 1994 when he happily retired.
Over the years Ross made many friends playing sports: baseball, hockey, pool, snowmobiling, cards, curling, golf, and darts. He also took up cross-stitching in his later years. He will be remembered as someone who had a good sense of humour, loved a DIY project, had the most organized garage in town and was always willing to help a friend or neighbour.
A private family graveside service will be held in Markdale Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations to the Centre Grey Health Services Foundation or the Markdale Food Bank would be appreciated.
