Douglas “Doug” Campbell passed away Monday, January 10, 2022, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 90.
Despite his battle with cancer, he held to his humble and positive nature, never giving into his condition, and always placing his love and concern for his family’s welfare above his own.
Doug met the love of his life, Dolores, and through 69 years of marriage they raised four children, Roy, Cochrane, AB, Valerie (MacIntosh), Sydney, Nancy (deceased 1974) and Blair, Peace River, AB. Doug and Dolores have eight grandchildren, Lindsay MacIntosh, NS, Kelly MacIntosh, AB, Keegan Campbell, AB, Brenna Campbell, AB, Kaden Campbell, AB, Natalie Campbell, AB, Sophia Campbell, AB and Jacquelin Campbell, AB; and one great-grandchild, Cedric “CJ” decamps, NS. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis, ON.
Doug was the son of the late Roy “Bun” and Mae (Maxwell) Campbell and was also predeceased by his brothers, Gordon “Spooky”, Bruce and Ross.
Doug loved being a Cape Breton’r. He enjoyed his back road drives and talking about both, Cape Breton history and his Westmount roots. His favourite place was the family bungalow in Nyanza, where he spent many years entertaining family and friends, hunting and fishing. Even as his medical condition worsened, he would sit in his favourite chair watching peacefully out over the bay lamenting life and remembering his little dog, Cassie.
Doug lived a full life and worked for the electrical department at the Sydney Steel Plant for 39 years, retiring in 1991. He will be sorely missed by all.
A celebration of life will be held at Westmount United Church on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery
