Walter Lee
Johnston – 77, Valley,
passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022, at Colchester East Hants Health
Centre, Truro. Born in Windsor, he was a son of the late Robert and
Marion (Lockhart) Johnston.
Walter worked for many years as an electrician with Phil
Miller Electric. He was a retired member of Onslow Belmont Fire
Brigade where he served for 28 years and enjoyed curling with the fire
brigade crew. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing,
snowmobiling and four wheeling, and when not outside, he tinkered with
model cars.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and although
he had a gruff exterior, we all knew that he was a big softie! He
enjoyed day trips back home through the Valley, especially Hantsport,
with his beloved wife, Nancy; they never knew where those old back
dirt roads would lead to. Trips to Newfoundland with Fred and Donna
provided many special memories as well. He had a great sense of humour
and loved a good debate; he may have thought he won those debates with
Nancy, but she knows that he wasn’t always right! He also
loved spending time with Scott, especially Saturday beers and
Scott’s deer pepperoni in the shed, debating and working on
their cars.
Walter is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Nancy
(McCully); son, Scott Johnston (Amanda Langille), Brookfield;
granddaughter, Kaitlyn Johnston, Brookfield; chosen granddaughter,
Autumn Boyd, Valley. He will be missed by family dogs, Gizmo and
Chevy.
We have been overwhelmed by the many acts of kindness during
this time and wish to thank all of you for checking in on us and your
phone calls. We also wish to thank Respiratory Therapist, Kami, at the
Emergency Department who went above and beyond with her efforts as
well as chosen son, Ryan Lentz, family friends, Lori, Fred and Donna,
Ron and Debbie, and Richard. Special thanks to Amanda Langille, CCA,
for all her help with the devastating loss of our beloved husband,
father, Papa and friend.
Firefighter’s Tribute Service will be held 7 p.m., Monday,
July 4, 2022, at Onslow Belmont Fire Hall, 12355 Highway 2, Belmont.
If so desired, donations in Walter’s memory to Canadian
Cancer Society or Onslow Belmont Fire Brigade are
welcomed.
