Spencer was born and raised in Hare Bay, Bonavista Bay. He attended Memorial University and completed a Bachelor of Engineering. He met his wife Geraldine on a blind date, they fell in love, were married within the year and started their family in Mount Pearl. Spencer’s work took the family to Churchill Falls where evenings and weekends were spent with family and friends enjoying the outdoors: hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, having a cook up in the woods or having a drink at his bar.
Spencer was the kindest, gentlest, most humble man, always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a longtime volunteer of the Lions Club in St. John’s, then in Churchill Falls along with many other organizations during his time in Churchill Falls including the youth justice committee and Junior Canadian Rangers.
Since retiring in 2018, Spencer spent most of his time with his wife, Geraldine, and his beloved granddaughter, Eleanor, taking her to the playground, playgroups, watching movies, playing dolls, eating ice cream and anything else Eleanor asked him to do. Spencer was affectionately known as Poppy Spencer among Eleanor’s friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Thank you to everyone who has shown their love and support to the Collins family over the last few weeks. The family would like to extend a very special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Armstrong and the staff of 4NB at the Health Sciences who cared for Spencer in his final days.
