Obituary
William Schloen
September 26, 1938 – June 14, 2022
William Fredrick Schloen passed away peacefully at The Bridge Hospice in Warkworth on June 14, 2022, in his 84th year, after a brave battle with cancer. We rejoice that William “Bill” is now with his Lord and Saviour in Heaven. A gifted listener and friend to many, Bill will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Bill was recently predeceased by his beloved wife, Enid Ruth Schloen (Van Blaricom). Cherished father of Heather Alm (Glen), J. David Schloen (Sandra), and Janet Boden (Michael). Bill was the proud grandfather of eight educated and accomplished grandchildren: Peter, Mark; Joshua (Chrissy), Emily, Samuel; Sophia (Terrence), Anna, J. Robert. Bill was also blessed with three great-grandchildren.
Bill was born in Bralorne, B.C., a gold mining town. His parents were John Frederick (Johann Friedrich) Schloen, who emigrated to Canada in 1928 from Rendsburg, Germany, and Helen Adelaide Lee, daughter of William and Bessie Lee of Toronto. Bill was predeceased by his sister, Mary Thorley (2018), and is survived by younger siblings Peter Schloen (Gundy) and Wendy Schloen.
Resourceful, optimistic, smart, and tenacious, Bill met every challenge with a “can-do” attitude. Self-employed throughout his working life, Bill established his own commercial rose business during the 1970s, and later became an independent ticket agent for GO Transit in Ajax and Oshawa, retiring at age 80 after 44 years in this role.
Bill’s family is deeply grateful to Dr. Kelly Parks and her palliative care team for enabling Bill to enjoy his final months in his own home, and for the compassionate care provided by The Bridge Hospice in his final few days. The family are also grateful to Bill’s brother, Peter, and long-time friends Alberta, Marian, and Steve, for providing Bill with practical help as his health declined.
Visitation will be held at Weaver -Warkworth, 70 Church St., on June 29, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment to take place at Cramahe Hill Cemetery in Morganston immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Bible League Canada or to Sunnybrook Foundation (Odette Cancer Centre) would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences and a recording of Bill’s service will be available at www.weaverfuneralhomes.com
