John Joseph O’Brien
October 27, 1945 – June 16, 2022
Passed peacefully away in a place that he loved on Thursday, June 16th, 2022, John Joseph O’Brien, aged 76 years.
Predeceased by parents Gertrude and John A. O’Brien; and sisters Anne Byrne and Collette Hall.
Leaving with a lifetime of special memories, his children John N. O’Brien and Colleen Dwyer (Jody) and their mother, John’s life partner Greer O’Brien; grandchildren: Johnathan and Gavin O’Brien and Aiden Dwyer; remaining sisters and brothers: Gerald (Mary), Patricia (Doug), Tina (Gord), Greg, Paul (Carol), Shane (Rachel) and Kieran (Stephanie); brothers-in-law Ed Byrne (Elizabeth) and Ray Hall; Peg and the entire Johnson family; and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Throughout his life, John attended St. Bonaventure’s College and both Memorial and Ryerson Universities and received his MBA. After his educational accomplishments, John served for 30 years as Executive Director of St. John Ambulance and designated as a commander of the Order of St. John which he received an award from Queen Elizabeth. He held numerous positions to include: President of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, member of Policy and Development Committees of the Liberal Party of Canada and President of the Canadian Society of Association Executives. John was also heavily involved in Hockey to include president of the St. John’s Minor Hockey Association.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, June 19th, 2022 from 7 p.m – 9 p.m and Monday. June 20th, 2022 from 10 a.m – 12 p.m, 2 p.m – 4 p.m and 6 p.m – 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022 from Caul’s Chapel, LeMarchant Road at 10 a.m with inurnment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
