Obituary
Patricia (Pat) Musgrove (L’Hirondelle) was born in Calgary on December 9th, 1936
Mom gently passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the age of 85 in Canmore, with her family by her side, and with her caregiver and our family friend Andrew Mabidi.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Brian Musgrove and her brother Don L’Hirondelle of Turner Valley.
Mom leaves to mourn her son Grant Musgrove of Cochrane, her daughter Jodi Musgrove and son-in-law Robert Taylor of Canmore Also left to mourn are her two grandsons Dillon and Andrew, the boys who she adored and spoiled every chance she could. They will deeply miss their little Kookum.
Mom also leaves behind her sister Yvonne Swanson of Athabasca, and sister-in-law Ann L’Hirondelle of Okotoks. Mom also has numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly, who mourn her passing.
Mom grew up in Turner Valley, with her parents John and Vi L’Hirondelle, older brother Don and little sister Yvonne. A fun childhood playing games outside with her friends and of course her pets made Mom’’s life a solid and carefree one.
Mom spent most of her time in the summer at the local outdoor swimming pool, something she loved her whole life, and even achieved her Bronze Cross at the age of 45.
The Girl Guides of Canada was a big part of my Mom’s life. She shared that with her Mum Vi, as she was a Guide leader for many years in the Valley. In 1950 at the age of fourteen, Mom was invited to the Girl Guide Jubilee in Ottawa, along with only three other girls from Alberta. She had to save up and raise ten dollars to pay for her entire trip. That was a lot of money in those days. She boarded the train from downtown Calgary and traveled across the prairie to Ottawa with one other girl from High River. It was an exciting adventure for her, being from such a small prairie town and was something she always treasured. She loved to share the stories and scrapbook she made from that most memorable trip.
In the mid-1950s Mom attended College in Calgary where she met lifelong friends Shirley and Joan. The three girls all shared a small apartment together while attending Business School. Mom loved College, she always said it was one of the best times of her life.
During her summer break, Mom would work in Banff, where there was a lot of laughter, dancing, and shenanigans. Her passion was dancing, and it was at this time she met and fell in love with our Dad,Brian Musgrove.
Mom and Dad on the dance floor quite simply stopped the crowd, and everyone watched as they twisted and turned with lightning speed and… grace. Mom and Dad married in December 1960.
Mom was also an accomplished Horsewoman, and downhill skier. This was something her and Dad did a lot together with their close friends, before starting their family. They traveled to Aspen, Jacksonhole, White Fish and many other spectacular North American resorts.
In 1968, they were so excited to welcome their new son Grant to their family. He was loved, treasured and adored. In 1972, they welcomed their little girl. That little girl was me. Mom loved being a mom, and gave everything to her kids (and grandkids) Endless hours of volunteering with the Brentwood Figure Skating club, and Cal-Alta figure skating clubs became her passion.
Mom also worked for Oil and Gas companies as a secretary. Her pride and joy though was her work as a Shoe model for Arnold Churgin at the Palliser Hotel. Her passion for shoes continued for her whole life. Her deep appreciation for fine Italian leather high heels and bar none the best collection in the entire city. With her adorable little feet and custom-made shoes, the petite Pat would walk the runway in the latest fashions. Later in life, when Grant graduated, and I was in junior high/high school, Mom went back to work part-time as a receptionist for Jack Halpin & Associates and then worked for Alberta Funeral Services Association. She retired in the early 90s.
Mom and Dad retired to Cochrane and moved to Gleneagles where they enjoyed spectacular mountain views. They traveled to Arizona a few times but mostly spent retirement enjoying her grandkids and a good Bingo game with her girlfriends.
Mom had a deep love and compassion for animals. Cats of course her favourite, but she always had a furry or feather pet of some sort all her life. She would go out of her way to make sure that the stray cats that people dropped off at the farm were always warm, fed and cuddled.
As a Kookum, mom loved and adored Dillon and Andrew. They had special picnics in the park. She played in the yard with them and watched them play sports. She drove them to appointments. Likewise, she was always an essential part of their lives and made every family get together, Birthday and Christmas extra special.
I would like to take this time to thank someone extra special. This person is Andrew Mabidi. Andrew met Mom just a day or two before Dad passed away. That was the day she moved into assisted care at Origins in Canmore. They had an instant connection. (We lovingly call Andrew the Kookum whisper). I’m at a loss for words of how incredible he is, how he is so loving, kind and patient with mom. He became her best friend to the very last breath. Andrew always treated mom with love, respect, and dignity. Thank you, Andrew, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You will always, always be part of our family.
We would also like to thank all the nursing staff, Care-aids, and all the Canmore Hospital staff who loved mom and cared for her so deeply and wonderfully. We thank you, and are very grateful for all of you.
Funeral services will be held at Snodgrass Funeral Home in High River June 11, 2022 at 2 pm. Interment to follow.
