John Ross O’Handley 2022

It is with great sadness that we, the family of John Ross O’Handley, regret to announce his passing on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Alderwood Rest Home with his family by his side.
Born April 27, 1932, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Steve and Margaret (Power) O’Handley.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy O’Handley (Scott MacQuarrie), Sydney; stepdaughter, Shelley Steele (George), Alberta; and their mother, Gail (Martell) O’Handley, Mira; grandchildren, Greg and Gail Steele, Jessica and David Pike; brother, Wayne (John Bennett), Leitches Creek and predeceased by brother, Wallace, Alberta.
Ross enjoyed retirement from Sydney Steel and was active in the community all his life, serving as Alderman in Ward 3, Board of Directors for Whitney Pier Credit Union and Board of Managers for Bethel Presbyterian Church in Sydney.
We will remember Ross for being a good father and grandfather who greeted everyone with a huge smile. He enjoyed walking, skating, and most of all baseball. He played for various ball teams including the 1967 Maritime Fastball Champions, the Sydney Statemen. While enjoying winters in Florida, he played for On Top of the World All Stars and Kids and Kubs senior softball clubs.
We would like to thank the staff at Alderwood Rest Home for their love and care for Ross, always treating him like family.
At Ross’s request, there will be no funeral or wake. A graveside committal will take place at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
