It is with sadness that the family of
Eugene Jackson announces his passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers
Hospital on June 2. He was loved and will be missed by his wife Rose
Ann, son Andrew, daughter-in-law Melanie, beloved grandsons Calder and
Jake, and brother Wendell.
Eugene was born on January 18, 1939 in
Havelock, NB, the ninth of ten children. Eugene will be missed by his
many Canadian and American relatives (cousins, in-laws, nieces and
nephews) whose company he greatly enjoyed. Eugene had a gift for
friendship and maintained close ties with fellow geologists on the
east and west coasts, with life-long friends Howe Chan and Ton-Fay
Lam, with friends from his years in Victoria (Ken and Marion Hargrove,
Carl and Leona Doucet) and with his Fredericton friends (Dow Johnston,
and Tim Horton’s cronies). Special mention is made of friend
Bill Connell with whom he solved the world’s problems over coffee and
Ray Bailey and Joe Tattersall for their kindness during his recent
decline.
Eugene’s interests were many – painting,
writing, music – but golf came first. He enjoyed the game and the
camaraderie, and was immeasurably pleased when his grandsons showed an
interest and a proficiency. Anyone who spent time with Eugene will
remember his sense of humor and knack for telling
tales.
That he had courage was clear from his
work as a young geologist in northern BC when he relied on a dog to
keep the black bears at a respectful distance and his courage didn’t
desert him in his last days. The family is grateful for the exemplary
care by paramedics, Emergency Department nurses, hospitalist Dr.
Ramsay, palliative care nurses, and physician Dr.
Goodyear.
In keeping with Eugene’s wishes, a
service is not planned but the family will celebrate his life. His
family asks that if you are so moved, you make a donation to the
Fredericton SPCA in his memory.

Death notice for the town of: Fredericton, Province: Nouveau-Brunswick
I just received a note from Howe. I extend my condolence to Eugene’s family. Though I attended MHS with Eugene, I met him at our reunions, and I read his book. He was a kind soul.
