Dr. Edward Slapcoff

With characteristic wit, good nature and determination, Ed spent his final days surrounded by love. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy Brand for sixty-two years. Treasured father and father-in-law of Bob and Jean Ai, Barry and Debbie, Marcy and Ian, Trina and Irwin, and the late Laurie. Loving grandfather of Lara and Liam, Benjamin and Ingrid, Daniel and Catherine; Jordan and Mandy, Lawrence and Lily; Linden and Cameron. Lifelong friend of Vida Foster. Cherished friend of Elaine Madoff. Dear brother of the late Joyce Stuart and brother-in-law of Joey and Gloria Brand. Ed will be profoundly missed by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and scores of friends, runners, students and colleagues, many of whom knew him as “Uncle Ed.” Ed was born and raised in Montreal, attended Baron Byng High School, and was the first child in his family to graduate university. Ed went on to teach in the Faculties of Dentistry at McGill University and the Université de Montréal for more than 60 years. His career as an oral surgeon was marked by absolute devotion to student learning and patient care, and he was well known for his professionalism, compassion and (occasionally funny) puns. Ed’s athleticism was legendary, and alongside running more than 40 marathons, he informally coached many novice runners and those attempting to reach personal goals. Ed, together with Dorothy, was a lover of opera and classical music. He was an avid reader who enjoyed book clubs, lectures and spirited conversations. Everyone who knew Ed recognized his integrity – his strong sense of right and wrong and commitment to supporting the underdog. A heartfelt thank you to his devoted friend Ellen Tissenbaum, and the caring staff of K7 and Palliative Care at the Jewish General Hospital. Much gratitude to Drs. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon, on Friday, June 3 at 9:45 a.m. Burial at the King Edward Benefit Association Section, Back River Memorial Gardens Cemetery, corner Berri and Sauvé Est. Shiva strictly private. Due to the advent of Shavuot, shiva ends Friday afternoon. A memorial gathering will take place at a later date.
