Obituary
Catherine Lillien Carriere
August 11, 1930 – February 25, 2022
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Catherine Carriere announce her passing on Friday February 25, 2022 at the age of 91 years at the Ste Rose hospital.
Catherine Lillien Carriere (Sissy) was born on August 11,1930 in Waterhen, MB to David and Mable Carriere. She was raised in a home with 12 brothers and sisters. Aunty Catherine did not have any children of her own, but to her, all her nieces and nephews and their families were considered her children.
Aunty Catherine was predeceased by her parents; David and Mable, and 11 of her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Hazel (Asmunder) Erickson, Mary (Albert) Campbell, Clarence (Laverne) Carriere, Florence (Jim) Jackson, Annie (Harry) Sanderson, Cyril (Olive) Carriere, Leonard Carriere, Joe Carriere, Ernie (Victoria) Carriere, Donald Carriere, Arnold Carriere and brother-in-law Dave Trumbla.
Aunty Catherine is survived by her sister Yvonne Trumbla; sisters-in-law Margaret (Arnold) Carriere and Yvonne (Donald) Carriere; and many, many nephews and nieces and their families.
Aunty Catherine (Sissy) was raised on the family farm in Waterhen, where she spent her life ranching, trapping and gardening. She taught many of her nieces and nephews (and some of their city friends) how to farm and run a trapline – whether it was to take over the family farm or whether it was teaching a city girl how to be a farmer just for the day, she was always willing/happy to share her knowledge and teach us everything she knew.
Aunty Catherine was an incredible cook, and she took great pleasure in teaching her family how to perfect the wonderful Carriere family recipes; especially her amazing fried chicken, strawberry shortcake, cream pie and spotted dog. Many of these recipes we all still use today, and we are so lucky to have learned from one of the best!
Aunty Catherine really enjoyed visiting with family, whether on the phone or in person, she could talk for hours about her experiences growing up in Waterhen. She had a great love for all her family, and she enjoyed sharing her life stories with us. Whether she was talking about the Carriere family history, farming with the team of horses, how to cook the perfect cream pie or just talking about her own life lessons, we are so grateful for the time she spent with us, and for the love of family and the wisdom she instilled in all of us.
Aunty Catherine was always interested in what was going on with us and was just content to visit and talk about every day things. She loved being with family, doing what she could for her family, and always got involved in events important to family. Aunty Catherine organized the Terry Fox walk in Waterhen every year; for 25 + years. How could you possibly say no when she asked “do you wanted to buy a Terry Fox tee-shirt; after all it’s for a good cause”. In 2017 she finally handed over that torch, but continued to encourage everyone to “buy that shirt” each year. I am sure Terry Fox and the folks at the Canadian Cancer Society would be happy that she was such a tenacious soul!
In her younger days, aunty Catherine did a lot of camping (which mostly involved piling a bunch of us in the car to go berry picking all over the province), taking bus trips South with her sister Florence, and travelling around Manitoba with her sister Yvonne. In 2011, Aunty Catherine moved in with her sister Yvonne; two Carriere sisters living in down-town Waterhen! Yvonne moved into the Dr Gendreau PCH early in 2018, but because of the wonderful care provided by her niece Betty and nephew Arnold, Aunty Catherine was able to stay in that home until her illness took her to hospital prior to her passing.
Anyone who knew Aunty Catherine knew she was a funny, loving, sassy lady with kind heart. She had a forgiving nature, was a wealth of knowledge and was stubborn as heck! She loved her family and she loved her lord. In keeping with Aunty Catherine’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her family will be hosting a celebration of her life on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 1:00 pm in the Waterhen Community Hall. Interment in the Waterhen Catholic Cemetery.
While we are sad that you are gone, we know you are no longer suffering, and you are reunited with your loved ones that went before you.
Rest in peace Sissy.
