Shirley Jean Whitehead, retired missionary with CSSM Ministries (now One Hope Canada), passed away on March 26. She is with her Lord Jesus Christ, whom she loved dearly and served faithfully. She was predeceased by her parents, Ken and Wilhelmina Whitehead and her sister Diane Knox. She is remembered by her niece, many nephews, and their families, as well as a multitude of friends.
Shirley was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on May 21, 1927. She attended public school in Ft. William and high school in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay). She lived near a lady who was a wonderful Christian and it was through her that Shirley heard the gospel for the first time and accepted Jesus Christ as her Saviour. Shirley attended Normal School in North Bay and then taught in a country school with just 13 pupils, where she also started a Young People’s and a Sunday School. She enrolled at Toronto Bible College in 1949, graduating in 1952. It was there that Shirley met her best friend and ministry partner, Rosella de Montmorency, and together they began serving the Lord with Canadian Sunday School Mission, teaching Bible in schools in Amaranth, Manitoba, and the surrounding area. Later their ministry expanded right across Canada as they held Kids Crusades and taught at Bible camps, children’s clubs and seniors’ homes. Rosie usually did chalk drawings while Shirley taught the Bible lesson. What a blessing they were in their ministry and many came to Christ as a result.
Shirley retired in 1992 and continued to make her home in Winnipeg. Her friend Rosie passed away in 2017. Shirley was continually grateful for the many who prayed for her and supported her financially as she served the Lord. She always remembered her many friends who helped and encouraged her, especially as her health and strength deteriorated. And what a blessing Shirley has been to these same friends down through the years and right until the day of her passing.
Gifts in memory of Shirley Whitehead can be made to One Hope Canada, 6-875 Gateway Road, Winnipeg, MB R2K 3L1.
