Maurice “Moe” Gallant was a generous man who was happiest listening to music, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He loved to cook, and never hesitated to generously extend an invitation to friends or make special treats for his granddaughter.
Maurice was born in Shediac Bridge on November 7, 1945, to Raoul and Maria (Leger) Gallant, the fourth of eight children. A well-known entrepreneur in the Moncton area, Maurice managed several gas stations and variety stores over the years. He was a “people person” and a natural-born salesman, with a career that also included working for Eaton’s, Rothmans Tobacco, Parlee Beach and the Moncton Museum.
Maurice will be remembered for his many years of volunteer work. A former President of Dieppe Minor Baseball, of the Dieppe Lions Club, and of the Moncton Crime Stoppers, Maurice was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and most recently served on the board of the Moncton Food Bank. He was previously named Dieppe’s “volunteer of the year”. Maurice was also a true believer in the magic of Christmas. He loved dressing up as Santa each year, and proudly starred in the greater Moncton parade on several occasions.
Maurice is survived by his wife, Murielle (Leblanc) Gallant; his daughter, Melanie (Patrick Assouad) and granddaughter, Elize of Ottawa; his son, Martin Gallant of Grande Prairie, Alberta. He is also survived by his sister, Rachel (Armand) Bannister; his brothers: Leonard (Christine), Adrian (Sacha), Bernard (Evangeline); his brother and sister-in-law: Gerry (Francine) Leblanc and his sister-in-law, Lorette Leblanc; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his sister, Marie-Therese (late Amedee) Gautreau; his brothers: Jean-Paul (late Cecile) Gallant; his late twin-brother: Fernand (late Shirley) Gallant, and his brother-in-law, Rodrigue (Lorette) Leblanc.
