Martinus was born in the Netherlands – the eldest of the four children of Klaas and Trijntje Slootweg (Art, Pete & Betsy). The Slootweg family moved to Canada in 1949, taking up farming in the Lower Mainland. Martinus married Ida Vlug in 1959 and together they had seven children (Cathi, Gary, Clarke, Martin, Peter, Henry David and Adrian). Martinus and Ida moved permanently to Powell River in 1965. Over the years, seventeen grandchildren were born and most recently ten great grandchildren. Social media and video chat proved to be marvelous tools for Martinus keeping him in contact with friends – both old and new – and family. Martinus took great comfort in his faith. He has passed into the house of his Lord. His large family and many friends miss him.
