Marilyn Petrin – born February 15,1936 – 86 years old
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Marilyn Petrin at the age of 86 on April 15, 2022 in Sudbury
Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario to Dorothy McNaughton and Alonzo McPhee (both predeceased), she married Raymond Petrin (predeceased) on May 2, 1953. Together they made their home in Kirkland Lake and Thunder Bay before moving to Sudbury where, along with raising her children, Marilyn had a successful career in Real Estate for many years. She is survived by her three children; Jim (partner Mary), Gary (wife Sheila) and Wendy (husband John). She was a much beloved grandmother to Dylan Petrin, Neil Petrin (Lauren), Aaron Petrin (Karla), Kirk Petrin (Kari), Jamie Petrin-Griffiths (Kyle), and Curtis Martin. She is also survived by two great grandchildren, AJ and Natalie Griffiths. She was predeceased by her sister Maxine Butts (husband Buck, predeceased), brother-in-law Herb Petrin, and sister-in-law Joyce Birnie (husband Jim, predeceased). Marilyn also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
Before Dementia changed her life, she was well-known for her love of cooking, particularly her legendary roast beef and turkey gravy; singing in church choirs with a special enjoyment of the Interlink Choir, and a long tradition as a sports fan who was seen and heard in the stands of the many sports her family played: starting in the 50s in Kirkland Lake watching her husband play hockey, in the hockey rinks and baseball diamonds cheering on Jim, Gary and Wendy, and then on to watching her grandchildren play the many sports they were involved in. She was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays fan and still enjoyed watching their games.
Although she struggled with dementia in her last years and the pandemic kept us from seeing her as often as we would have liked, her eyes would light up any time she saw her beloved family and when she heard one of the tunes she loved to sing. The memory of her spirit and courage will live on with us forever. The family would like to acknowledge, with gratitude, the wonderful care Marilyn received from all of the staff at St. Gabriel Villa long term care facility. Memorial Visitation at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral, 233 Larch St., Sudbury. Friends may call from 4-8pm Friday and after 10am Saturday. Memorial Service in the R.J. Barnard Chapel on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 11am. Cremation with interment in the family plot of the Civic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Gabriel’s Villa would be appreciated.
