Yvonne’s Obituary
Yvonne Clare MacKay, Dartmouth N.S. passed away January 26, 2021 at the age of 91.
She was born May 10, 1929, in Toronto, Ontario to the late Ellen Elizabeth (Hartshorn) and Emerson Baker Reid.
In 1947, Yvonne met the love of her life, Donald Angus MacKay and moved from Toronto to Halifax, Nova Scotia. They married April 1948 in Halifax, and had a rich and rewarding 69 years together.
As if she wasn’t busy enough raising 9 children, she was a founding member of the Dartmouth Kennel Club and enjoyed raising her boxers, attending dog shows and still talked of the time she and Eleanor Foley went to the Westminster dog show in New York City. She also loved her Brussels Griffon dogs.
Yvonne was very musical, could play many instruments and was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. She sang in the choir at St. Thomas More Church in Dartmouth for many years. She particularly loved the music of the Big Band era and she still enjoyed singing those tunes. She never forgot a lyric.
She was very involved in the Kiwana’s and the Dartmouth Community Youth Bands during the seventies and early eighties. Yvonne and Don are remembered by many of the band kids for their fund raising to pay for instruments, uniforms, sheet music and band trips. Their efforts culminated in a trip to Italy in 1978 when the band was invited to play at an International Band Festival.
Yvonne was a Girl Guide leader, a member of the Pioneer Village Red Hot Mamas, the Lake Echo Red Hat Society and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, knitting, quilting, collecting antiques and watching old movies. She was kind, generous, and had a wonderful sense of humour.
Yvonne is survived by her children JoAnn (Terry), Christine (Ken), David (Edith), James (Jane), Terry (Janice), Carol (Graham), John and son-in-law Raef.
She leaves 21 grandchildren, Lisa, Emily, Penny, Carmon Peter, Julie, Shellie, Colin, Davey, Kirk, Mary-Claire, Elizabeth, Angela, Cassidy, Nathaniel, Bryce, Kevin, Coleen, Caitlin, Danielle, Allison, Peter and 24 great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her life long friend, Brenda Pozdnekoff.
She was predeceased by her husband, Don MacKay, her son, Daniel MacKay, her daughter, Valerie Wilson, and her sister Katherine Baillie.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Online Condolences at www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca
