William (Bill) Stanley Hume
It is with heart wrenching sadness that the family of William (Bill) Stanley Hume announces his passing on Sunday May 9, 2021, Mother’s Day. He passed peacefully wrapped in his mother’s handmade quilt with family by his side.
He will be forever lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Helene, his daughter Bonnie (Scot), his sons Scott (Jennifer), Cameron and James (Lynne), his little sister Nina (George) and his little brother Doug (Teri). Bill was prideful of his grandchildren Crystal, Alena, Brandon, Bryanna, Alexa, Joseph, Cole and Shane and his great-grandchildren Khaison and Shaelyn. He is predeceased by his loving mother Nellie and father George.
Bill, a chartered accountant, was a well-loved and respected 30 year employee with the Revenue Canada Agency working in Ottawa, Calgary and Halifax. One of his greatest joys in the job was spending a number of years travelling to foreign countries negotiating tax treaties. He was also very caring and considerate of his employees whom he always said were valued assets to the department.
Everyone who knew and loved him will tell you he was a unique, intelligent, loving man full of life and adventures. He was a master model ship builder, his greatest pride and accomplishment being the HMS Victory, a 104-gun first-rate tall ship of the line of the British Royal Navy captained by Lord Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The ship was launched on May 7, 1765. Bill realized his lifelong dream and was totally enthralled when he toured the original HMS Victory in Portsmouth, England in 2012.
He was a man of many hobbies and one of his greatest loves was reading books about historical naval fiction in the age of sail and of roman times, roman legionnaires, centurions and gladiators. When he travelled to the Colosseum in Rome and the Parthenon in Athens, it was a joy watching him absorb the atmosphere and remembering what it was like in those times. We like to say he was like a child in a candy shop.
Any of Bill’s family and friends will tell you he was also very well versed in history, his sense of humour was infectious, even up to the last days of his life. He was a huge fan of photography and enjoyed putting family albums together for his children. He loved the great outdoors camping in the majestic Rocky mountains, delighting in summer days at his mom’s beloved cottage at Charleston Lake, fishing, hunting, golfing and curling.
Knowing Bill, his final wish for those of us who will mourn and miss him terribly is for us to “pick up our boots and keep walking” in memory of him.
A very special thanks to the caring teams at Grand River Hospital and Innisfree House.
Should you desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation in Bill’s memory may be made to either the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario or Innisfree House (cards available at the Henry Walser Funeral Home). Due to covid-19 restrictions, a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Visit www.henrywalser.com to view Bill’s memorial.
