Obituary
Jamieson: William Thomas of Washago passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Mariposa House Hospice in Orillia, Ontario in his 78th year after a brief struggle with cancer. He was the beloved spouse of Nancy (nee Ulrick). Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba (which he considered a bit of a distinction) Bill was the youngest of four boys and he liked to tell people that his baby book was pink. He is predeceased by his parents Gordon Wentworth Jamieson and Pearl (Eden) Jamieson and his brothers Gordon, Ken and Dennis. Bill grew up in Petrolia, Ontario and studied at the University of Western Ontario. Throughout his career as an educator he taught at St. Jerome’s High School in Kitchener, Innisdale Secondary School (briefly) in Barrie and Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational Institute. His subjects included history, geography, business and library and he served as the site administrator of the computer system at ODCVI. Bill’s sense of humour enhanced his affirming approach with his students and he was known for his ability to draw out the quiet ones. He was a firm supporter of teachers’ federations. In conversations during demonstrations and on the picket line he could always be counted on for a measured analysis of the current situation. In all three communities Bill felt blessed to have worked with the finest and zestiest of colleagues so many of whom became dear friends. Along with Nancy, Bill enjoyed gardening, one might even say grounds keeping, on their rural property. He loved playing goal with his old-timer hockey teams, fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. He enjoyed the company of his cats and walking his dogs. A Blue Jay fan, Bill watched them play in the CNE stadium, the Sky Dome/Rogers Centre and in Dunedin. To Nancy’s delight, he was a superlative cook, always scanning for a new recipe. He was a lifelong, voracious reader and an astute student of current affairs. He could pack a great deal of contempt into the name “Trumpy-dump”. Bill loved visiting the Ulrick family farm and eating the butter tarts of his beloved mother-in-law, Carmel. She will miss Bill, as will his brother- and sisters-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews in Ontario and PEI, and his friend Jim Quigley. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a future date. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the CNIB Guide Dogs and Mariposa House Hospice and can be done through the Mundell Funeral Home (705) 325-2231.
